What happens when a 1940s typeface gets a second life through laser cutting? Or when an open-source digital font becomes a physical tool for activism? This workshop dives into the “Make, Break, Repeat” cycle through two distinct typography projects that embrace the friction between digital and analog. In the first project, Matthew resurrects Trylon, a mid-century slab serif of the now-defunct Baltotype foundry in Baltimore MD, digitally restored and translated into laser-cut relief blocks suitable for traditional letterpress printing. In the second, Jacob reimagines Raleway, an open-source geometric sans serif from the League of Moveable Type, as a modular stencil system with individually cut letter tiles that function within a portable grid framework. In our workshop, we will discuss the technical and iterative hurdles of optimizing type for fabrication and facilitate a hands-on printmaking session using our specimens. Whether you're drawn to historical type revival or excited about hacking open-source fonts into new forms, you'll leave with practical skills, fresh ideas for your own projects, and a one-of-kind print! 📅 Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2026🕰️ Time: Matthew's Talk 2-2:30 p.m. Printmaking Workshop 3-4:30 p.m.📍 Location: University of Baltimore Robert L.
