Concerts by the Coast opens its new season with&nbsp;internationally acclaimed pianist Vladimir Khomyakov in The Great Fantasies&nbsp;&mdash; a solo recital devoted to three of the most imaginative and powerful works of the piano repertoire. An award-winning concert pianist, Khomyakov has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, North and Latin America, appearing as soloist with leading orchestras and earning prizes at numerous international piano competitions. His performances are distinguished by virtuosity, dramatic intensity, and a deeply personal approach to the repertoire. The Great Fantasies traces the idea of the fantasy across the 19th century, beginning with Beethoven&rsquo;s revolutionary Sonata quasi una fantasia in C-sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2 &mdash; the celebrated &ldquo;Moonlight&rdquo; Sonata. From its haunting opening to its explosive finale, Beethoven transforms the traditional sonata into something intensely personal and dramatically free. At the heart of the program is Robert Schumann&rsquo;s Fantasie in C major, Op. 17, one of the great monuments of Romantic piano music &mdash; passionate, intimate, and deeply poetic. The evening culminates with Franz Liszt&rsquo;s Apr&egrave;s une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata, inspired by Dante&rsquo;s Divine Comedy and ranging from darkness and turmoil to some of Liszt&rsquo;s most luminous and transcendent writing. The three masterpieces explore the boundary between sonata and fantasy, structure and freedom, intimacy and virtuosity &mdash; from Beethoven through the height of Romanticism. A complimentary wine reception begins at 6:30 PM and continues after the performance, offering an opportunity to meet the artist and enjoy the evening with fellow music lovers.
