Artist: Nick Walsh is an abstract artist in Traverse City. He deconstructs subjects into flat, discernible shapes, then arranges them in vibrant, bold colors across the canvas, exploring the interplay of form and color.

Outside of art, he’s a graphic designer, photographer, and videographer. For more information, visit his website at nickwalshdesign.com.

Value: $200

About the Piece: "Reading helps fuel my creative process. I rarely stick to one book at a time; I like to bounce between several, sometimes randomly drop into pages or chapters of familiar favorites for creative sparks. This helps me to get outside my head and balance multiple ideas at once.

The painting embodies the chaotic, colorful landscape of that reading habit. Through abstraction, I explore an openness to unexpected inspiration, allowing words, stories, and sudden insights to steer my artistic direction.

[So it goes... - Kurt Vonnegut]"

It's Hard To Read
$200

Starting bid

Artist: Michelle Chaisson

Value: $555

About the Piece: I was thrilled to see the Call for Art from the Folded Leaf for a piece representing Literacy. To be honest, I had been taking the tremendous gifts of Literacy for granted. It felt good to take a closer look at the importance and the impact of being able to read and write. To understand a subject intimately. To have the ability to research and explore a variety of topics and resources. To express oneself to others about what's been discovered and the conclusions reached. What a tremendous and powerful skill to possess. The human right to communicate and connect, the ability to negotiate and navigate, the power of persuasion and propaganda.

Literacy seems more complicated in this digital age where knowing what is real and what is fictitious is constantly co-mingled and contaminated. “It’s Hard To Read,” is what I have called this piece, because I think in this time, where we have more information at our fingertips than at any other time in history, it is increasingly hard to decipher the truth and find a sense of literacy.

The Inner Light
$200

Starting bid

Artist: Don Rutt

Value: $600

About the Piece: Books do more than tell stories. They open doors to new ideas, introduce us to different

perspectives, and help us see beyond our own experiences. From childhood favorites to George

Orwell’s 1984, books can be comforting, challenging, and sometimes unsettling. They entertain us, make us think, and encourage us to question the world around us.

This photograph reflects what makes reading so powerful. Literacy isn’t just about reading words on a page; it’s about staying curious, thinking for ourselves, and continuing to learn throughout our lives.

The Joy of Reading
$200

Starting bid

Artist: Anne Benington

Value: $400

About the Piece: Reminiscent of Winslow Homer's 'A New Novel.' I usually do rather abstract landscapes,  but this painting of a girl reading was inspired by a watercolor class that asked us to imitate another artist in a creative way. I was really pulled into the project, which let me exhibit, in an artistic way, my love of reading and my profession as a teacher of literature. This piece gave me joy.
