Own a remarkable piece of World War II aviation history, personally signed by the men who lived it.
John D. Shaw’s Ramrod – Outward Bound depicts one of the defining realities of the air war over Europe: American P-51 Mustangs escorting formations of B-17 Flying Fortresses deep into enemy territory. At the center of the scene is Col. Clarence E. “Bud” Anderson’s P-51 Mustang Old Crow. Anderson became one of America’s legendary fighter pilots, completing 116 combat missions and earning credit for 16¼ aerial victories.
This is #1 of only 200 prints produced in the Victory “Mighty Eighth” Edition, personally signed by 14 World War II combat aviators, men who flew P-51 Mustangs and B-17 Flying Fortresses in the skies over Europe.
The signatures include celebrated fighter aces and combat veterans such as Clarence “Bud” Anderson, James L. Brooks, Clyde B. East, Steve Pisanos, Urban “Ben” Drew, Art Fiedler, Donald M. Cummings, Robert A. Karr, Joe Peterburs, Clinton Burdick, William H. Allen, Lawrence “Larry” Powell, Clint White, and Elwood “Woody” Blondfield.
Together, these men accumulated dozens of aerial victories and hundreds of combat missions. Among them were multiple aces and double aces, pilots who fought German fighters and jets, and a B-17 pilot representing the bomber crews the Mustang escorts were sent to protect.
Their signatures transform this piece from a depiction of WWII history into a tangible artifact connected directly to the generation that made that history.
The artwork itself commemorates the long-range escort missions that became crucial to the Allied strategic bombing campaign. The arrival of the P-51 gave American bombers effective fighter protection deep into Germany, helping the Allies contest and ultimately gain air superiority over Europe.
Many of the veterans whose signatures appear on this artwork have now passed away, including Bud Anderson, who died in 2024 at age 102. Their signatures, and their firsthand connection to the air war depicted here, cannot be recreated.

John D. Shaw's The Unlimiteds captures two of the most legendary aircraft in the history of the National Championship Air Races battling around the pylons at Reno-Stead: Lyle Shelton's #77 Rare Bear and Bill “Tiger” Destefani's #7 Strega.
Originally painted in 1993, The Unlimiteds was commissioned to commemorate the opening of Reno's National Museum of Air Racing and went on to become one of John Shaw's best-known depictions of Unlimited air racing.
At the center of the painting are two machines that came to define an extraordinary era of Reno racing.
Rare Bear, developed from a Grumman F8F Bearcat, became one of the fastest and most famous piston-powered racing aircraft in history under the leadership of legendary racer Lyle Shelton.
Alongside it is Strega, Bill “Tiger” Destefani's extensively modified P-51 Mustang and one of the most successful Unlimited racers ever to compete at Reno.
Their rivalry became part of Reno Air Race legend. In the 1992 Gold race, the year immediately preceding Shaw's painting, Strega and Rare Bear raced together at tremendous speed until Rare Bear suffered an engine failure, leaving Strega to take the Unlimited Gold victory.
Shaw's painting immortalizes that remarkable era: highly modified descendants of World War II fighters, flown just above the Nevada desert at speeds approaching 500 mph, racing wing-to-wing around the pylons at Reno-Stead.
Today, the artwork carries additional historical significance. The National Championship Air Races held their final races at Reno-Stead in 2023, closing a chapter of Nevada aviation history that began in 1964. The Unlimiteds preserves the sight, aircraft and personalities that made that tradition legendary.
This example is signed by artist John D. Shaw and beautifully custom framed with a distinctive gold-star aviation motif.
A fantastic piece for a Reno Air Race enthusiast, warbird owner, pilot, aviation historian, or collector, and an especially meaningful piece of Reno, Nevada aviation history.

A piece of American warbird history commemorating one of the country's great early gatherings of historic military aircraft.
This limited-edition 1993 John D. Shaw Gathering of Warbirds print was produced for the 22nd Annual Gathering of Warbirds, held at Madera, California, August 20–22, 1993.
This example is individually numbered #234 of 1,000 and signed by renowned aviation artist John D. Shaw.
At the center of Shaw's artwork is one of the most unmistakable American fighters of World War II: the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, sweeping low across the California landscape with other historic military aircraft in the sky around it.
The Gathering of Warbirds began in 1972 and became an important fixture of America's emerging warbird-preservation movement. After moving to Madera Municipal Airport in the 1970s, the event brought together remarkable collections of surviving WWII-era fighters, bombers, transports and trainers—and, importantly, returned many of them to the air.
Contemporary accounts describe Gatherings in which more than 85 warbirds crowded the ramp at Madera, including P-51 Mustangs, B-17s, B-25s, Corsairs, Sea Furies, transports, trainers and other historic aircraft.
The 1993 event commemorated by this particular print was the 22nd Annual Gathering of Warbirds, making the artwork itself a surviving piece of memorabilia from an important chapter in American warbird culture.
More than three decades after this print was issued, the mission represented by the Gathering remains extraordinarily relevant: keeping historic military aircraft—and the stories of the people who flew them—alive for future generations.

Fifty years of Reno Air Race history, captured in one artwork and signed by the pilots who made that history.
John D. Shaw’s Reno Gold – The 1st Half Century was created to commemorate the first half-century of the National Championship Air Races, which began at Reno-Stead in 1964 and became one of the most celebrated traditions in American aviation.
Shaw brings together an extraordinary collection of legendary Unlimited racers from across different eras of Reno history, including Rare Bear, Strega, Dago Red, Voodoo, Dreadnought, Precious Metal, Miss America, Conquest I, Smirnoff Bearcat, Czechmate, Tsunami, Critical Mass, September Fury, Super Corsair, White Lightnin’, Red Baron, Pond Racer and others.
But what makes this particular example especially significant is what appears beneath the artwork:
More than 30 authentic signatures from Reno racing pilots and personalities whose careers helped create the history depicted above them.
The signed Gold Edition brought together generations of Reno competitors, including legendary names associated with the races such as Clay Lacy, Darryl Greenamyer, Steve Hinton, Skip Holm, John Penney, Bruce Lockwood, Matt Jackson, Sherman Smoot, Thom Richard, Steve Hinton Jr. and others.
Collectively, these signatures represent decades of competition in one of the fastest and most extraordinary forms of motorsport ever created.
The significance of Reno Gold has only grown with time. The National Championship Air Races held their final races at Reno-Stead in 2023, ending a nearly six-decade chapter of Nevada aviation history.
What was originally created as a celebration of Reno’s first 50 years now also serves as a record of an era that has come to an end at Stead.
For a Reno Air Race fan, pilot, warbird enthusiast or aviation historian, this print brings together the aircraft, personalities and authentic signatures of the men and women who participated in one of the defining traditions of Reno aviation.
