Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) is an award-winning, evidence-based, intergenerational artmaking program for people living with dementia. It was developed at Scripps Gerontology Center, an Ohio Center of Excellence at Miami University, in 2007. People living with dementia (Artists) are paired with Volunteers (High School seniors/College Students) who are trained to rely on imagination instead of memory and focus on remaining strengths instead of lost skills. OMA enables people living with dementia to assume new roles as artists and teachers and leave a legacy of beautiful artwork. Jacoby is offering an 8 week session to persons living with dementia in our downtown Alton community arts center this Fall. Starting on September 27th, and running 8 Saturdays, Artists will meet with an assigned Volunteer and experienced Program Facilitator, Chris Baker, to create beautiful, meaningful artwork. These works will be on exhibit in the Jacoby Community Art Gallery during the months of December, January, and February. We will host an opening reception on Friday, December 5th from 6-8pm.&nbsp; The OMA fee covers all art materials and facilitation of the program.
