James D. Phillips beautiful work is on display at Rene Wiley Gallery.

Phillips is especially known for his role in one of Galveston’s most remarkable stories of resilience following Hurricane Ike in 2008. After the storm destroyed thousands of the Island’s beloved trees, Phillips was among the artists who transformed some of the remaining trunks into whimsical sculptures—turning the scars left by the hurricane into public works of art. Today, Galveston’s tree sculptures have become a beloved part of the Island’s landscape and a lasting symbol of its recovery.
