The White House for a Day: An Exclusive Tour of the Historic Madison House Wednesday, November 11 | 2 PM | Brookeville, Maryland Step back in time to August 26, 1814, when a small Maryland town became the temporary seat of our nation's government! As British troops invaded Washington, D.C., and set fire to the White House, President James Madison and his advisors fled the nation's capital, seeking refuge in the quiet town of Brookeville, Maryland. Their sanctuary was the home of Caleb and Henrietta Bentley—today known as the Madison House, famous for being the "White House for a Day!" Built around 1796, this beautifully preserved Federal-style home was Brookeville's first substantial structure. Caleb Bentley, the town's first postmaster and a prominent merchant, was also a skilled clockmaker, silversmith, engraver, and inventor who helped finance the community's early growth. The historic property even includes its original post office and store wing. Now, you have a rare opportunity to explore this remarkable piece of American history! Join us for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour led by homeowner and historian Sandra Heiler, who will share fascinating stories about the house, its remarkable residents, and the dramatic events that brought a U.S. president to its doorstep.
