The Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS), founded in 1977, supports volunteer maritime rescue services worldwide and honors extraordinary rescues. AFRAS traces its origins to a 1976 reception in London and has evolved to recognize heroes in the US Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and merchant mariners. It presents awards and supports initiatives to improve maritime safety.
