The Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries (FONCPL), established in 1980 and officially incorporated in 2009, promotes excellent library service throughout North Carolina. They encourage the growth of local Friends of the Library groups and facilitate the exchange of ideas among them. While the Frannie Ashburn Friend of the Year award is no longer given out as it was in the past, the organization recognizes individual members nominated by local Friends groups.
