Gerton Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, founded in 1974, provides fire protection to the Gerton community. Born from a devastating house fire where outside fire departments couldn't assist, the community came together with donations to create their own fire department. They operate out of the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Community Center.
