Founded in 1815, the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association built Mechanics' Hall in Portland (1857-1859) as a communal space with a lending library. Today, Mechanics' Hall provides literary arts programs, music, performances, and a library. Its mission: making knowledge, ideas, and arts accessible through cultural events, educational programs, and instruction.
