The South Salem Fire Department, established in 1938, is a 100% volunteer organization protecting the hamlets of Cross River, Waccabuc, and South Salem. The department responds to various emergencies and offers community programs. Originally based out of Tator's Garage, it now operates from its own firehouse and has a long history of service to the community.
