21st Century Thame Limited

21st Century Thame inspires communities to create spaces for nature, promoting biodiversity through gardens and sustainable practices. Their mission is to support nature recovery and engage the public in environmental stewardship.

Order and collect your free pumpkin plant for the Thame Giant Pumpkin Competition🎃!We are busy sprouting 100 Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seeds and have little pumpkin plants ready for you to plant in your garden or allotment!🌱The plants will be available for collection in two fantastic town centre shops who have very kindly agreed to host the event - Petcare and Bizzie Lizzie Flower Shop. You must pre-book your pumpkin here first though so we match up the right numbers of pumpkins and people! You need to collect between 5th and 10th June (closed on Sundays) 9-5 and show your ticket. One pumpkin per family. Plant somewhere that gets sun for 6 or more hours a day. They sprawl a lot but you can put it in a border and encourage the vines to go where you want them. Give them lots of water to the root, not getting the leaves wet so they don't go mouldy! You will need to ask a neighbour to water it if you go away! Have a look online for more information about growing a pumpkin. Then, the week before Halloween, we want to see pictures and find out what your pumpkin weighs! The biggest pumpkin in Thame grown from these seedlings will win a special prize! You can then use it as your Halloween pumpkin and we will post fun recipes and food waste prevention tips for you to use it up (and some pumpkin dog treat recipes too!)The pumpkins are free - if you are able to contribute a small donation to our work with hedgehogs, trees and nature recovery, a donation is very welcome but is optional.

Join us for an evening with rescued owls! 🦉 Following on from the success of Thame’s first hedgehog festival, Hogfest 2025, this year we will be exploring owls in our ecosystem. Our evening will follow a daytime event focused on children's activities. The evening event is for adults and teenagers and offers loads of insight into the lives and conservation of owls in Oxfordshire. Our speaker, Lu Barton, from Owl Conservation Project will be sharing the stage with very special guests…upto 4 different types of owls. We will be opening the evening with a mini poetry salon showcasing three powerful entries from our Owlfest Nature Poetry Competition for adults. We will also be drawing our raffle and can offer a licensed bar. As always, we will focus on what we can personally do to turn man-made spaces into small wildlife havens!🌱. Please join us from 7pm onwards for a drink and a chat and connect with some great local people. The evening event will start at 7.30pm. Secondary-school age children are welcome to attend with an accompanying adult.

Learn traditional hedgelaying and help local wildlife thrive 🌿 Join us for a practical, hands-on training session where you’ll work on a real hedge in one of Thame's public parks, guided by tutors. You’ll learn safe hand-tool use, key techniques, and how a well-managed hedge supports birds, insects, and small mammals.Hedgelaying involves making diagonal cuts near the base of trees within the hedge and then bending the trunk at a diagonal. We will then put stakes in along the hedge and weave flexible branches along the top. It will regrow vigorously both from the base and along the bent over trunk, thickening up the hedge. This hugely improves it as a quality wildlife habitat. No experience needed; just bring curiosity and a willingness to get stuck in. The work requires basic physical fitness but technique is most important, so you do not need to be strong; and open to adults of all ages. No under 18s for this one, sorry! If you have pre-existing injuries or accessibility needs and want to find out more before signing up, email us on contactus@21stcenturythame.co.uk. Training is free but if you are able to make a contribution to our nature recovery work, you are welcome to make a donation if you wish.

Always meant to get a hedgehog hole but not got round to it yet? We understand! Bring it to the top of your to-do list the easy way by getting one of our lovely volunteers to make it for you. We have also got an open invitation so you can arrange a convenient time with a volunteer. Please note that as holes are made by volunteers at no cost to you, this is done at your own risk. By booking you accept that you 1) 21st Century Thame would not be responsible for any costs relating to damage or other unwanted result or consequence stemming from the hole being placed, though of course we will only send volunteers who have made holes successfully before and they will not go ahead if they feel the site is unsuitable; 2) you confirm the fence is your own property and you have agreed with the adjacent neighbour that they accept a hole (cats, rats etc are not an issue - only small dogs and tortoises that might escape! it is 13 x 13cm approx). If you wish for an insured person to undertake the work, for example if you have an expensive or new fence or complex site, we recommend booking a handyperson to do it. There is no charge - donations towards our nature work are always welcome but not necessary.
