Soul Care and the Person of Welcome : A Spiritual Retreat (Limited space ~ 50 ppl)We live in a tense cultural moment — one where our disagreements can feel like life or death, and it's easy to grow defensive, guarded, or worn thin. Before we can be people who welcome others well, we have to first attend to our own souls. This retreat is an invitation to slow down and is designed for soul care providers--counselors, therapists, pastors, and spiritual directors. Through guided teaching, times of quiet reflection, and space to simply meet with God, we'll explore what it looks like to root hospitality toward others in a well-tended inner life — becoming people who can make room for those who are different from us, without losing ourselves in the process. Join us for a day set apart with Dr. Laura Baghdassarian Murray, author of Becoming a Person of Welcome and founder of the Digital Silent Retreat Ministry, as she leads us through themes of soul care and welcome. This retreat is for chaplains, pastoral caregivers, psychiatrists, psychologists, pastoral counselors, spiritual directors and just about anyone serving in a human-facing vocation. [Light refreshments / meals provided] Speaker bio:Dr. Laura B Murray (DMin, Fuller Seminary) is the director of spiritual engagement and innovation at Fuller Seminary's Center for Spiritual Formation. She is the author of Pray as You Are, serves on the Ministry Collaborative Advisory Board, and previously served at Highland Park Presbyterian Church as the pastor of spiritual formation.Laura is also the founder of the Digital Silent Retreat Ministry, rooted in the practice of hospitality to provide brave and courageous spaces for people to connect with God and others. She lives in the Dallas area with her husband and two children.

Dealing with Church HurtToo real, too deep, too common – How can we be agents of healing in the midst of it all? Whether dealing with outright spiritual abuse, more general disappointment with spiritual leaders and the institutional church, or disillusionment with Christianity as a whole, it is crucial that we learn to come alongside people who are reckoning with agonizing pain and doubt. How can we acknowledge real wrongs and yet encourage commitment to community? How can we walk alongside someone on the road to deconstruction with grace and truth? How can we minister as agents of healing in such broken spirituality? Joel Wharton, a former counselor, care pastor, and founder of Repurposed Lives Coaching & Consulting, has seen the gamut. Both in his counseling and pastoral work, and his own life experience, Joel has lived out the pain, doubt, and tension and emerged with a robust, nuanced faith that holds space for struggle. Now living out of state, we are thrilled he is able to join us for this session!

Kingdom Focus in a Partisan AgeResisting Political Hyper-Polarization in Favor of the Way of Jesus When Satan tempted Jesus in the desert, one of the key lines of seduction was to entice Jesus toward political power. After all, wouldn’t the world be better with Jesus in charge? Couldn’t he do so much good? Similarly, his own followers wanted to crown him king. But Jesus resisted Satan from without and his followers from within, never wavering that his Kingdom is not of this world. Yet our culture has never been more politically polarized, anxious, and driven to extremes by algorithms which benefit from our attention, and not from our cooperation. How can we be politically engaged without looking toward political religiosity, whether that’s devotion to the right or the left? How can we uphold kingdom causes in kingdom ways? Gerald Murphy, Senior Pastor of Garden City Church, leads a diverse congregation from a myriad of backgrounds into thriving fellowship and deep discipleship. He's earned the respect of key CDN stakeholders on this subject and we're thrilled to learn from him!

Our 2026 Discussion Series for Pastors is "Tools for Every Sphere of Discipleship." In 2025, we considered what a disciplemaking culture would look like across spheres of discipleship -- ourselves, discipleship groups, families, small groups, congregations, and communities. This year, we aim to drill down on practical, effective tools to help us get there. Our August discussion will focus on tools for disciplemaking in small groups. We will meet in the Lookout Room at the Upper Arlington COHatch over cookies & coffee. We value every voice in the room. Please join us!

The Irreducible Role of the Holy Spirit Lost focus on the third person of the Trinity Curriculum, tools, methods, skills, giftings, resources… we are often told these are the keys to effective disciplemaking (including, maybe by us!). Yet Jesus promised his followers that it would be better for us if he left, because the Holy Spirit would then come. In a church culture that either over-emphasizes the Holy Spirit to the detriment of human involvement and agency, or de-emphasizes the Holy Spirit as an overcorrection, how can we more accurately understand, view, and experience the Holy Spirit’s role in disciplemaking? Lee Davis, Senior Pastor of Berlin Church, is a wise and faithful servant, committed disciplemaker, and longtime friend of the Columbus Discipleship Network. I always love learning from him! You will, too.

Our October discussion will focus on tools for disciplemaking in a congregational setting. We will meet in the Lookout Room at the Upper Arlington COHatch over cookies & coffee. We value every voice in the room. Please join us!

Relational Apologetics The Message, and the Messenger Our culture used to ask questions about the objective evidence for the existence of God; now we are more likely to get questions about whether or not Christianity works. Does it affect real people with real lives? Does it actually change people? And how? Does it address the problems of human life? Does it provide tangible hope? Christians, in view of the Greatest Commandment and the Great Commission, understand that the message must be both proclaimed and demonstrated, embodying the grace and mercy and holiness of God in such a way that glorifies God. This can be reflected in our ministry practices and programs…or it can impact that upcoming breakfast meeting with a friend. This topic will call us to embody the message on our best days and our worst days, and challenge us be intentional with people as we reflect the message in all of life. Jason Seiple, Founder of Parable Project and Director of Youth and Youth Mission at Christian Assembly, lives these questions everyday in his youth-focused ministries. Deeply engaged with those both in and outside the church, he has a helpful pulse on this topic.

Imagination & Inspiration in Disciplemaking Shane Tucker, beloved Director of Networks at For Columbus, recently earned his Masters degree from Durham University, UK (via CMS, Oxford) in Theology, Ministry & Missions. The focus of his thesis was on the role Imagination plays in our Formation and Vocation, and how the Arts inspire this process. His insights on the role imagination and creativity play in our walking and working with Jesus will help us better understand and curate our own imaginations as we live into who He’s inviting us to become, and how He’s inviting us to join Him in the renewal of all things.

Money: How to Tackle America's #1 Idol Money is a thorny topic many avoid in disciplemaking, but probably one of the areas of biggest hidden or unaddressed sin we face in this country. How can we talk about finances in a way that addresses the root issues without being overly proscriptive or controlling? Courtney Markley, a certified Christian Financial Counselor and founder of the Center for Financial Discipleship, is well-versed in talking about not just numbers, but our heart and posture before God as we consider this important topic.

Kingdom in Career: Disciplemaking in the Marketplace Adults spend most of their hours and focus at work – and that isn’t a bad thing. Similar to our discussion about money, if we don’t focus on discipling people in a healthy approach to career, we are missing the mark. How can we strive for a healthy work/life balance, while having a high work ethic? How can we walk out the tension between climbing the ladder and walking in the way of Jesus? John Scroggins leads the Baton Exchange, which aims to disciple young professionals in the way of workplace ministry, and he has lots of excellent thoughts on this subject. Join us!

Perseverance & Boldness Despite Discouragement & FearHow to keep going when our emotions scream ‘Stop!’ We might know the right thing to do, but the reality is, our emotions are much more powerful than we give them credit for. Our culture satirizes faithfulness to God and mocks his followers. Our feelings often stop us from being faithful, especially when we are mired by fear, discouragement, virtuous victimhood, or wrestling with our own doubts and struggles. How can we be faithful to our calling in the midst of it all? And, in some cases, should we? Ebony Fadis, founder of Queenship, has a compelling personal story and successful ministry helping people to listen to truth in this area. I'm excited to learn from her!

Hospitality: Unlocking a Key Pathway for Effective Disciplemaking There is something very intimate about inviting others into your home or space – and this is especially true in more communal cultures from around the world. Hospitality can be as much a mindset as anything else. As our culture becomes increasingly individualistic, what can we learn from this ancient, biblical, and effective skill about how to make disciples? Carol Trzcinski has used hospitality across various life stages, ministry opportunities, and among different demographics to make the love of Jesus tangible to many. I love learning from her fresh ideas and life-long faithfulness!

Sexual WholenessGender, Sexuality, and Bodies in a Broken World In a cultural moment marked by confusion, reactivity, and pastoral complexity around gender, sexuality, and the body, many leaders feel caught between silence and reactivity. This talk offers a third way—moving beyond suppression or simple affirmation toward a deeper, formational engagement with desire. Grounded in theology, spiritual direction, and relational neuroscience, it equips pastors and practitioners to guide others with greater clarity, compassion, and integrity, while cultivating a more integrated and pastorally responsible vision of sexual wholeness. Erin Zappin, Counselor & Spiritual Director at Vineyard Counseling Center, comes highly recommended to speak on this topic and offers a nuanced and refreshing perspective!
