In collaboration with Sinema Llangoed, this thought-provoking double screening explores what lies beneath the surface—both literally and metaphorically. Featuring UNDERLAND, a cinematic descent into the Earth's hidden realms, alongside a short film examining our sensory and emotional connections with nature, the evening invites audiences to discover unseen worlds and reconsider their relationship with the environment around them. UNDERLANDSWe know so little of the world beneath our feet. To most it is a place only of fear and darkness, though to a brave few it is one of knowledge and wonder to be found nowhere else. Based on the bestselling book by Robert Macfarlane, UNDERLAND is a cinematic documentary that voyages into worlds rarely glimpsed by human eyes. The Rocks - Nature’s SoundStep beneath the surface and into an unseen world. Combining underwater soundscapes with nature's own biological rhythms, this immersive short film reveals hidden connections between water, plant life, and human presence. UNDERLAND + The Rocks - Nature’s Sound at Sinema Llangoed

About this talk: Caroline Schofield will explain how earth pigments are collected, created and used in the visual arts. We will explore how people have worked with pigments over time from early humans onwards. We will then look at the current revival of artists using found and foraged pigments in their artwork. Caroline will share some of her experience of how working with earth pigments informs her arts practice and an idea of some of the practicalities involved in making your own paints. This 45min talk will be followed by a 15min Q&A with Caroline, and GeoMôn geologists will also be at hand to answer any of your more geology-oriented questions, expanding this into an interactive evening spanning both the arts and sciences. Speaker: Caroline Schofield is an artist and eco-therapist based in North Wales who, over the past five years, she has studied the practicalities of using natural pigments to make paint and experimented with how to use these materials in her own artwork. She is a GeoMôn volunteer and runs Guided by Nature who offer workshops and courses in nature connection and working with natural art materials. You can discover more about her practices on her website. Please note: this talk will take place online and through the medium of English, although you are welcome to ask questions and participate in Welsh should you wish. An online meeting link will be sent out by email the day before the talk. This talk is one of several 2026/2027 winter talks hosted by GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark, on geo-related topics ranging from the arts to geoscience. Byddwn yn archwilio sut mae pobl wedi gweithio gyda pigmentau dros amser, o'r bodau dynol cynharaf hyd heddiw. Yna, byddwn yn edrych ar yr adfywiad cyfredol o artistiaid sy'n defnyddio pigmentau a ganfuwyd neu a gasglwyd o'r byd naturiol yn eu gwaith celf. Bydd Caroline yn rhannu peth o'i phrofiad o sut mae gweithio gyda pigmentau pridd yn dylanwadu ar ei harferion artistig, ac yn rhoi syniad o'r agweddau ymarferol sy'n gysylltiedig â gwneud eich paent eich hun. Bydd y sgwrs hon, sy'n para 45 munud, yn cael ei dilyn gan sesiwn holi ac ateb 15 munud gyda Caroline. Bydd daearegwyr GeoMôn hefyd wrth law i ateb unrhyw gwestiynau mwy penodol am ddaeareg, gan droi'r digwyddiad yn noson ryngweithiol sy'n cwmpasu'r celfyddydau a'r gwyddorau. Y siaradwr: Mae Caroline Schofield yn artist ac yn eco-therapydd sy'n gweithio yng Ngogledd Cymru. Dros y pum mlynedd diwethaf, mae hi wedi astudio'r agweddau ymarferol ar ddefnyddio pigmentau naturiol i wneud paent ac wedi arbrofi gyda sut i ddefnyddio'r deunyddiau hyn yn ei gwaith celf ei hun. Mae hi'n wirfoddolwr gyda GeoMôn ac yn rhedeg 'Guided by Nature', menter sy'n cynnig gweithdai a chyrsiau ar gysylltu â natur a gweithio gyda deunyddiau celf naturiol. Guided GeoMôn Walk: Porth Saint, Rhoscolyn

An outdoor creative writing workshop inspired by the geology of Traeth Lleiniog led by geologist Maia Whomsley-Walker. We will begin with an hour exploring the glacial boulders and gravels of the beach, and learning their geological story from first observations up. You will learn about how to make geological observations, and what we look for when we tell the stories of these rocks. After this Maia will lead a series of creative writing prompts inspired by the geological observations and stories of the beach, as well as a selection of readings. You don't need to be a writer, poet or geologist, just come along and have a go! Meeting point: Traeth Lleiniog picnic site and carpark (///brightens.regret.leans)Public Transport: Nearest bus stop is at the Plas Penmon Nursing Home, 5min walk away along quiet roads.Distance: 1.5kmDuration: 2hr (+/- 30min)What to bring: Your own writing book and stationary, plus snacks and water. You may also choose to bring something to sit on, as we will be standing or sitting on boulders/sand while me make our observations and writings. Accessibility and terrain:The walk will take place along the beach, so expect uneven cobbles, rockpools and sand. The walk will thus require a reasonable level of fitness and mobility, but will be taken at a meandering pace. We will be near some sections of unstable cliff, and you are thus expected to stay away from the cliffs for reasons of safety. You must wear the correct clothes for the weather on the day, plus sturdy shoes/boots suitable for walking on sand, cobbles, and uneven terrain. Unfortunately there are no toilets available on site. Please note that this event is run mostly in English, though if you wish to write or talk in Welsh please do! Maia speaks Welsh and will be able to answer your questions or repeat things in Welsh. Email maia@geomon.org.uk if you have any further questions! --------------------------------------------------------- Gweithdy ysgrifennu creadigol awyr agored wedi'i ysbrydoli gan ddaeareg Traeth Lleiniog dan arweiniad y daearegwr Maia Whomsley-Walker. Hygyrchedd a thirwedd: Bydd y daith gerdded yn digwydd ar hyd y traeth, felly disgwyliwch goblau anwastad, pyllau creigiog a thywod. Felly bydd y daith gerdded yn gofyn am lefel resymol o ffitrwydd a symudedd, ond bydd yn cael ei chymryd ar gyflymder troellog. Byddwn yn agos at rai rhannau o glogwyn ansefydlog, ac felly disgwylir i chi gadw draw o'r clogwyni am resymau diogelwch. Storytelling through Landscape Photography - Guided Walk and Workshop

What to expect:Join us for an immersive wander through landscapes layered in deep time. You will be guided to connect creatively with the geology and local heritage as we follow the coastal path from Porth Amlwch to the historic holy well, Ffynnon Eilian. Our leisurely pace with regular stops will give us the time and space to observe and experience our surroundings. Trustee of GeoMôn and geologist Maia Whomsley-Walker will share the story of how time and geological forces have shaped the land around us, as well as what it means to think and see geologically. Artist and Eco-Therapist Caroline Schofield from Guided by Nature will guide us in connecting with our environment and the elements through our senses. You will receive artistic prompts and ideas about how to make expressive field notes, letting the rhythm of the earth guide your hand to make unfiltered marks on paper. You do not need to be an artist, but you will need to bring your own sketch book plus a few basic art materials of your choice (such as pencils, charcoal stick or pastels). Please note that this event is run in English, although Maia speaks Welsh and would be happy to chat and translate as needed! The Art of Awe: a guided GeoMôn walk

The Earth's Own Life: a mini-symposium brings together two women who have spent many hours researching the works and lives of geologists Edward and Annie Greenly. The event will be made up of two talks, each 20min long with a 10min Q&A, by Judith Noble and Maia Whomsley-Walker. These talks will be accompanied by a tour of the Watch House exhibition by Judith, and a chance to hold some of the many rocks that inspired the Greenlys. This mini-symposium marks the opening of a temporary exhibition at the Watch House of new work by Judith Noble, inspired by the lives and work of geologists Edward and Annie Greenly: The Earth's Own Life. All talks are given in English, although Maia Speaks Welsh and will be able to answer questions and give tours of the exhibition bilingually. The Earth’s Own LifeA talk and exhibition tour by Judith NobleIn this talk, artist Judith Noble will discuss her fascination with the work and lives of Edward and Annie Greenly. She will explain how the body of work exhibited at the Watch House was created over five years of close observation and recording of one site at Rhosneigr, using various media including photography, sea water printing, book creation and textiles. The work is inspired by the Greenlys’ writings and drawings, and mirrors in its processes and recording of tidal and seasonal patterns, their observations on change and time. Judith Noble (nee Higginbottom) is an artist and Professor Emerita at Art University Plymouth who grew up in Ynys Môn. The landscapes and geology of the island have inspired her work for over fifty years, providing locations and images for moving image and installation works. The Geology of RhosneigrA talk by Maia Whomsley-Walker (featuring real rocks!)In this talk, Maia will lead us through the geological story of the rocks exposed at an near Traeth Rhosneigr, a story spanning almost half a billion years of Earth's history. We will learn how the incredible folds observed on the beach came to be, and what they mean for the history of Ynys Môn. Maia Whomsley-Walker is a trustee, social media manager, and researcher for GeoMôn who grew up at the edge of Eryri. She is an early-career geologist whose research has included chemical analyses of the clays at Parys Mountain, geological mapping in Newborough Forest, radio-carbon dating of the drowned forest at Trearddur Bay, and fault mapping in the Swiss Alps. Bedrock and Bone

What 93 million year old black shale from Colorado tells us about ocean health today Around 93 million years ago, much of the world's oceans lost their oxygen almost entirely. Strangely, one inland sea bucked the trend: the Western Interior Seaway, which once split North America in two, saw pulses of oxygen return to its waters even as the rest of the planet's oceans suffocated. Drawing on her PhD research analysing ancient seafloor sediments from this seaway, geologist and GeoMôn volunteer Libby Robinson explains how geochemists reconstruct the chemistry of long-vanished oceans, why this one region behaved so differently, what happened to marine life through it all, and what this deep time puzzle can (and can't) tell us about ocean deoxygenation happening today. Speaker: Libby is a geologist with a PhD in organic geochemistry, focused on reconstructing ocean conditions during a major Cretaceous anoxic event using rock samples from the ancient Western Interior Seaway. She now works in international climate risk and sustainability consulting, and also runs Uncommon Ground, bringing geology and deep time to a wider audience through events and nature connection. Please note: this talk will take place online and through the medium of English, although you are welcome to ask questions and participate in Welsh should you wish. An online meeting link will be sent out by email the day before the talk. Ocean Anoxia Past and Present

These creative writing workshops will explore some of the basic principles of geology, from how sediments get turned to rock, to how tectonic plates move and why volcanoes form. The sessions will be structured around the rock cycle - the idea that all rocks are in a constant process of transformation from one type to another. Throughout these sessions we will explore not just the concepts themselves, but also how writers and artists have expressed and developed these ideas in their work over time. We will draw inspiration from a diverse range of writers, from the Pochveniks ("poets of the soil") to experimental Oulipian works, with a bit of Shakespeare and Tennyson thrown in alongside more modern writers. You will be given the space to respond in the moment to creative writing prompts inspired by the topics and pieces explored, so that you come away with a notebook full of new writings to expand upon outside of these sessions. We welcome participants from all walks of life - you don't have to be a professional writer or geologist to take part, and you certainly don't have to share any of your writings with the group if you don't want to. Please note that these sessions will take place online, and through the medium of English, although participants are welcomed to contribute, write, and ask questions in Welsh. Throughout we will ask questions like: What happens when rocks become verbs, as opposed to nouns? How deep is time? How deep is place? How can we express and respond to our "earthiness"? Week 1: SedimentaryKey words: layers, pages, unconformity, memory, record, erosion, archive, accumulation, ruins, weathering, deposition, cementation, fossils, grains, remains, burial, forgotten.Case studies: Traeth Lleiniog erratics, and Penmon limestones. Week 2: MetamorphicKey words: transformation, recrystallisation, heat, reinvention, pressure, stress, remnant, memory, distortion, deformation, folding, foliation.Case studies: The South Stack metasediments, and blueschists of Llanfairpwll. Week 3: IgneousKey words: magma, destruction, lava, rebirth, cooling, fire, crystallisation, eruption, forge, intrusion, extrusion, molten, smoke.Case studies: The Coedana granites, and Palaeozoic dyke swarms. Week 4: EvanescenceThe second half of this workshop will give you the chance share your writings, thoughts and questions from the previous sessions.Key words: cycles, change, deep time, transformation, palimpsest, journey, renewal, return, continuity, memory, the forgotten, origins, endings, rhythm, storytelling. Workshop leaders: Maia Whomsley-Walker is a director of GeoMôn and geologist with a passion for fault and fracture systems. She writes in her spare times and takes great joy in finding new and delightful ways to talk about rocks. Sarah Wordsworth is a poet, nature writer, and amateur geologist based on Anglesey. -------------------------------------------------------------- Bydd y gweithdai ysgrifennu creadigol hyn yn archwilio rhai o egwyddorion sylfaenol daeareg, o'r ffordd y mae gwaddodion yn troi'n greigiau, i sut mae platiau tectonig yn symud a pham mae llosgfynyddoedd yn ffurfio. Bydd y sesiynau wedi'u trefnu o amgylch y cylch creigiau – y syniad bod pob craig mewn proses barhaus o drawsnewid o un math i'r llall. Drwy gydol y sesiynau hyn, byddwn yn archwilio nid yn unig y cysyniadau eu hunain, ond hefyd sut mae awduron ac artistiaid wedi mynegi a datblygu'r syniadau hyn yn eu gwaith dros amser. Byddwn yn cael ysbrydoliaeth gan amrywiaeth eang o awduron, o'r Pochveniks ("beirdd y pridd") i weithiau arbrofol Oulipo, ynghyd â ysgrifau Shakespeare a Tennyson ochr yn ochr ag awduron mwy modern. Sylwch y bydd y sesiynau hyn yn cael eu cynnal ar-lein ac yn Saesneg, ond croeso i gyfranogwyr gyfrannu, ysgrifennu a gofyn cwestiynau yn Gymraeg. Drwy gydol y cwrs, byddwn yn gofyn cwestiynau fel: Beth sy'n digwydd pan fydd creigiau'n troi'n ferfau, yn hytrach nag enwau? Pa mor ddwfn yw amser? Pa mor ddwfn yw lle?
