A Witness to Our ResilienceBuilt in 1923 during the Great Migration, the Passtown Elementary School was morethan a building—it was a sanctuary. While other vestiges of the era of segregation—the theaters, the YMCAs, the James Adams School—have been lost to time anddemolition, Passtown School remains. It is the last physical anchor of a segregatedway of life in Northern America and a testament to the teachers and families whomade Hayti a flourishing community. The Mission: From Classroom to Community HubThe Hayti Historical Society is on a mission to rehabilitate and repurpose thisNational Register of Historic Places landmark. Our vision is to transform thesehistoric rooms into a modern, sustainable Community and Heritage Center—a placefor training, recreation, and the celebration of African American legacy. The Milestone: April 1, 2026We are currently in a race against time. We must raise $50,000 by April 1, 2026 to finalizethe acquisition and begin the vital structural preservation required to protect thebuilding's integrity. Your gift to the Pass School Community & Heritage Center helps keep Hayti’s story present and visible for our community and neighbors. Together, we preserve and share the African American legacy of Hayti’s schools, churches, businesses, and families. 📚 On September 26, 2026, the historic Passtown School in Valley Township will reach a remarkable milestone: it will turn exactly 103 years old. For over a century, this structural landmark has stood as an enduring monument to African American educational excellence, cultural resilience, and local community strength during a period of segregation. Today, the Hayti Historical Society is actively working to transition this sacred site into the brand-new Pass School Community & Heritage Center—a collaborative neighborhood hub honoring our shared past while building a vibrant asset for our future. However, our historic school building is showing severe signs of age and urgently needs comprehensive rehabilitation before it can safely open its doors. We are launching an energetic corporate and residential campaign to fund and organize critical structural recovery. We need immediate support to finance professional hazardous cleanup, procure building supplies, secure ongoing operational costs, and deploy volunteer "elbow grease" teams. Each contribution supports the preservation and rehabilitation of the historic Passtown Elementary School, along with research, community programs, and multimedia projects that honor this history. 🏫 Thank you for helping safeguard this heritage and opening its doors to future generations.
