The Hendrick I Lott House Preservation Association is dedicated to preserving the historic Lott House, promoting cultural heritage, and educating the community about its significance in local history.

Join Friends of the Lott House to mark the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Long Island &mdash; the first major engagement after the Declaration of Independence, fought right here in Brooklyn. Before the fighting began, British forces marched, camped, and moved through South Brooklyn, with the historic Lott Farm among the nearby sites. Hear presentations from archaeologist Dr. Alyssa Loorya and historian Dr. Tom Campanella, enjoy a live performance by Linda Russell and reenactors.&nbsp;

Join <a fr-original-style="" href="https://qwertpoetry.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Qwert Poetry</a> for a hands-on poetry workshop inspired by nature, community, and the world around us, on the historic lawn of the Lott House. In this workshop, you&#39;ll explore poetry from the first idea to the finished piece. We&#39;ll use both traditional writing methods and vintage-style typewriters. You&#39;ll get to create your own poem, try out different styles, and type your final version on a typewriter. This workshop is a chance to be creative, reflect, and connect with your surroundings. It&#39;s a unique way to slow down, write with care, and experience poetry in a hands-on way. We&#39;ll provide everything you need, including paper, envelopes, and wax seals. You don&#39;t need any poetry or writing experience to join us. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to try something new. Registration is required. This event is open to anyone 16 and older. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. About QWERT Poetry&nbsp; Pierce D. Logan is a published poet and educator based in New Jersey. Pierce founded QWERT Poetry, a live typewriter poetry experience, in 2015 in order to connect others through poetry. Through QWERT Poetry, Pierce has partnered with educational institutions such as NYU and Planting Fields Arboretum, brands such as Ferragamo, and hotels such as The Hotel Chelsea and The Maker Hotel. These live poetry sessions allow participants to be seen and discover what they most want reflected in a poem. The typewritten poems often last a lifetime and continue holding value beyond the moment they were created. The community-facing programs, &ldquo;Type-Ins&rdquo;, also play a central role in Pierce&rsquo;s mission to make poetry relevant to our lives by engaging others in typing, allowing youth and adults alike to unplug and enjoy manual typewriters.

Oysters were once a daily staple of Brooklyn life &mdash; and by the mid-1800s, Black oystermen were at the heart of the waterfront industry that fed the borough and shaped its shoreline. Join us at the Lott House for an afternoon of history with Ben &ldquo;Moody&rdquo; Harney, of TheRealMotherShuckers, will demonstrate historic oystering tools and techniques. A special exhibition of the Lott family&#39;s oystering collection will also be on display. This program offers a unique chance to explore Brooklyn&#39;s waterfront heritage. &nbsp;A special exhibition of the Lott family&#39;s oystering collection will also be on display. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. About Ben Moody Harney&nbsp; Ben &ldquo;Moody&rdquo; Harney is the founder of MotherShuckers, which started as the only oyster cart in New York City and currently operates as a 7-day location at Pier 57. Fascinated by the story of Thomas Downing, &ldquo;the Oyster King of New York,&rdquo; the son of freed slaves who peddled oysters on Wall Street in the late 1800s, and went on to open one of the most successful oyster restaurants of his time, Harney envisioned operating his own oyster cart. MotherShuckers along with more than 75 purveyors in New York City, donate shells to the Billion Oyster Project, an initiative to restore a billion oysters to the New York Harbor by 2035. Moody&#39;s vision is clear: He wants to return oysters to their status as an everyday food for all New Yorkers, breaking down barriers and encouraging diverse communities to embrace this delicacy. With a focus on accessibility and education, he is paving the way for a new era of oyster appreciation in the city.
