Permascaping / Homegrown Foods 501(c)(3)

Permascaping is an earned-income charity (like Goodwill) on a mission to build self-sufficient communities: villages that are food-secure, water-secure, and waste-free.

Join the Phoenix Food Forest for a two-day community Permablitz as we expand the neighborhood food forest with a major planting of citrus trees from Permascaping’s wholesale citrus program. Together, we’ll plant citrus and build resilient perennial shrub and ground-cover guilds designed to support pollinators, improve soil, conserve moisture, and create a productive living landscape. We’ll also tackle earthworks and—if City approval is secured in time—curb cuts to help bring stormwater into the landscape. Volunteer registration is organized into morning and afternoon shifts on both days. Choose the day and shift that works best for you. Each shift initially has 20 volunteer spots; we may open more capacity after those spots fill. Exact meetup instructions, what to bring, and any City-approval updates will be emailed to registered volunteers before the event.

Phoenix Food Forest Community Permablitz: Citrus & Pollinator Guild Planting

Learn how to harvest mesquite beans. Which trees? How to process them into flour and drinks. Each event supports our mission to increase community-owned food security. You’ll leave with practical foraging skills, simple recipes, and a deeper connection to the plants in your own neighborhood.

Mesquite Bean Harvesting Walk

Kelly returns for the third year in a row with her mesquite milling machine demo, wild food tastings, and a plant walk through the park, including harvesting mesquite beans. Palo Verde Bean Harvesting Walk

Join us for a hands-on foraging and cooking experience! We'll meet up, drive a short distance to the trees, and spend about 30 minutes harvesting palo verde & mesquite blossoms — a surprisingly tasty wild edible that can be used like capers, steamed like peas, or pickled and preserved. After the harvest, we'll head back to cook what we picked together. Come ready for the heat and leave with new skills (and maybe a snack). Donation-based event, thank you!
