A nationally recognized speaker, clinician, and consultant, she has more than 20 years of experience specializing in eating disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns and is passionate about advancing culturally responsive, evidence-informed care.Paula is the founder of Looking Inward Counseling &amp; Consulting Services, where she provides counseling for individuals navigating eating disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem and identity concerns, relationship challenges, and life transitions. She offers counseling services in Oklahoma, North Carolina, Florida, and South Carolina and serves as an approved supervisor in North Carolina.In addition to her private practice, Paula serves as Clinical Training Specialist and Diversity &amp; Inclusion Co-Chair at The Renfrew Center, where she contributes to clinician development, program training, and initiatives that promote inclusive, high-quality care. She has also held executive and operational leadership positions supporting clinical excellence and innovation across multiple treatment settings.A Certified Eating Disorders Specialist and Approved Consultant (CEDS-C) through iaedp&trade;, Paula serves on the Board of the National Eating Disorders Association and its Clinical Advisory Council, the advisory board of Eating Disorder Recovery Support, and the board of Project BLACKBIRD. Across her clinical, educational, and advocacy work, she is committed to advancing compassionate, culturally responsive care that recognizes the complexity of each individual&#39;s lived experience.Presentation Description: Eating disorders in Black women are frequently underrecognized, underdiagnosed, and undertreated due to persistent stereotypes, systemic inequities, and culturally incongruent understandings of illness. Clinicians who rely solely on traditional presentations may inadvertently overlook symptoms, delay intervention, or contribute to disparities in care. This presentation encourages participants to reimagine eating disorder care for Black women by integrating ethical practice, cultural responsiveness, and evidence-based approaches that center their lived experiences.Participants will explore how culture, identity, body image, trauma, emotional avoidance, and systemic factors can influence the presentation and treatment of eating disorders in Black women. The workshop will also examine ethical considerations related to multicultural competence, bias awareness, and equitable care across professional disciplines. With more than two decades of experience in the eating disorder field, Sandee specializes in eating disorders, body image, trauma, and the unique challenges of recovery in midlife and beyond. A yoga practitioner for more than 50 years, Sandee began formally integrating yoga into her clinical work in 2012 and developed Better Body Esteem&trade;, a yoga-based counseling approach designed to help individuals cultivate a more compassionate and connected relationship with their bodies. Her work emphasizes embodiment, accessibility, and eating-disorder- and safety-informed approaches to movement. Sandee is the author of The Weekly Nourishment Journal and is actively involved in education, consultation, &nbsp;support, and advocacy for individuals experiencing eating disorders in midlife and beyond. She regularly presents to clinicians and professional communities on eating disorders, body image, trauma, yoga, and recovery across the lifespan Description: Midlife and beyond can bring profound changes in our relationship with our bodies and ourselves. Shifts in appearance, strength, flexibility, balance, bone health, and physical function may occur alongside changes in identity, relationships, caregiving roles, work, loss, and our sense of where we belong. For some, this stage of life can also bring loneliness, isolation, or the experience of feeling less visible or needed than in earlier years. These physical and psychosocial transitions may intersect with body image concerns, eating disorder recovery, and long-held beliefs about what our bodies should look like or be able to do. Yoga offers an opportunity to experience the body differently. Rather than focusing on appearance, performance, or changing the body, an eating-disorder-informed and safety-informed yoga practice can invite curiosity, awareness, choice, connection, and respect for the body as it is today. Yoga may also offer something particularly meaningful during a time of changing roles and identities: an opportunity to reconnect with oneself, experience agency, be present in the body, and, when practiced with others, experience community and belonging. This 90-minute presentation will combine 30 minutes of education and discussion with 60 minutes of experiential practice. We will explore the intersection of eating disorder recovery, body image, aging, and yoga, with attention to both the physical and psychosocial transitions of midlife and beyond. A safety-informed approach will be woven throughout the presentation.&nbsp;Participants will learn why commonly taught yoga poses may not be appropriate for every body and how osteoporosis and osteopenia, joint replacements or limitations, balance concerns, injuries, and other physical changes can influence pose selection. Emphasis will be placed not simply on how to modify a pose, but on understanding why a movement or position may be contraindicated and when an alternative may be more appropriate.During the experiential portion, participants will explore these principles through accessible chair-based and standing yoga, grounding, breath awareness, balance, and mindful movement, with selected postures and adaptations demonstrated on a yoga mat. The focus will not be on achieving a pose or how the body looks while doing it, but on sensation, function, strength, stability, boundaries, choice, and what it feels like to inhabit the body we are living in now. No prior yoga experience is necessary, and participants will be encouraged to make choices based on what feels appropriate for their own bodies. Learning Objectives:&nbsp;At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:1. Identify at least three physical, psychological, or psychosocial transitions of midlife and beyond that may influence body image, eating disorder recovery, identity, connection, and a person&#39;s relationship with their body.2. Describe at least three ways an eating-disorder-informed yoga practice may support recovery in midlife and beyond, including embodiment, interoceptive awareness, nervous system regulation, agency, connection, and a sense of belonging.3. Identify at least three safety considerations or contraindications for yoga in midlife and older adults and describe how a safety-informed approach can guide the adaptation or selection of poses for changing bodies. Format:&nbsp;The first 30 minutes will provide the clinical and practical foundation for understanding the intersection of aging, body image, eating disorders, identity, connection, and yoga, including contraindications and the reasoning behind appropriate adaptations. The remaining 60 minutes will bring these concepts into the body through an experiential practice using chairs, standing postures, breath, grounding, mindful movement, and selected mat demonstrations. Brief opportunities for reflection and teaching will be woven throughout the practice so participants can experience how cueing, choice, adaptation, connection, and attention to safety can change the experience of yoga.
