Pollinator Paradise YXE & Kolby Clunas present Music in the Garden

An introduction to the native grassland and aspen forest plants and ecosystems of southern Saskatchewan Required equipment &ndash; outdoor clothing, including good boots, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, rain jacket, sunhat. Useful additional equipment &ndash; plant keys and hand lens (the instructor will have a number of these on hand) Instructor &ndash; Dr. Rob Wright, plant ecologist and botanist, with 50 years experience exploring and describing the plant communities and ecology of native grasslands and forests in Saskatchewan with the U. of S., SRC, SIAST, and the Saskatchewan Forest Service and Parks Service. It is increasingly recognized that prairie ecosystems are some the most endangered in Canada. They are also critical ecosystems for plant biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation. This course will introduce participants to native grasslands and trembling aspen forests, examining the plant communities, soils, and management of these ecosystems. Participants will be introduced to native plant identification, vegetation sampling and description, site and soil description, and the measurement and aging of trees. No technical background is required. SyllabusPrairie Plant Communities and Ecosystems. &nbsp;Part 1: Native Grasslands and Aspen Forests The workshop begins at 9 a.m., on July 26th and 27th at Cherry Lake Farm, and finishes at 4:30 p.m. on each day. Registrants will be provided with a map showing directions to the site. Parking is available on site. Participants must wear field-appropriate clothing including long pants and long-sleeved shirt, sturdy boots, and a sunhat, and have a rain jacket on hand. A one-liter water bottle and pack lunch are required, and insect repellent, hand lens, plastic bags for plant collecting, and a sheath knife, are useful. Wild Plants of the Canadian Prairies, Budd&rsquo;s Flora, the Flora of Alberta, Wildflowers Across the Prairies, Plants of the Western Boreal Forest and Aspen Parkland, Flora of the Great Plains, and Prairie Wildflowers are useful plant guides. Useful phone plant id apps include PlantNet, PictureThis, Plant.ID, and iNaturalist. This is an introductory course. No prior ecosystems, soils, or botanical training is required. Introductory handouts on vegetation sampling and description, site description, and soil description, will be supplied. A brief introduction and overview to the day&rsquo;s activities will be given, indoors, at the start of each day. The course will focus on identification&nbsp;skills to distinguish rare plants (including Species At Risk) from their look-alikes, but will also include information about detection, survey types, and habitat hotspots. Participants will gain improved knowledge of Saskatchewan&#39;s rare plants and how to confidently identify them. This course is most suitable for those with beginner to intermediate botany skills. Rare Plant Identification Course

This 3-day course is an introduction to bryophytes (mosses and liverworts), designed to develop the skills needed to detect and identify common Saskatchewan wetland species. The course focuses on field detection (microhabitats, field-level features), microscopic examination, and taxonomy to confidently identify and distinguish between species. NPSS 30th Anniversary Merch Pop-up Shop

Deadline to register is Friday, March 13. Join us for our Annual General Meeting and Conference. &nbsp;This year&#39;s theme is &quot;Celebrating the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists&quot; and features a range of interesting speakers and topics. &nbsp;Saturday&rsquo;s events will begin with the business portion of our meeting and then transition to a set of great presentations. &nbsp;Speakers include Dr Edward Bork from the University of Alberta presenting recent research from the Roy Berg Kinsella Research Ranch, John Skinner from Skinner Native Seeds speaking about the Sioux Valley Restoration Project, Jenna Sarich sharing observations about her ongoing Nuffield Scholarship research on the environmental sustainability of grazing systems, and Beth Dolmage from the Ministry of Environment discussing the work of the Botanical Assessment Working Group. &nbsp;We will also have a panel discussion on holistic range management featuring Laura Hoimyr (Box H Farm), Lochland and Hannah Mckinnon (Old 3 Grazing Corp), and others. &nbsp;Saturday will also feature short films and a silent auction. On Sunday afternoon, we will host the Prairie Ecosystems module of the Saskatchewan Master Naturalist Program, where participants will learn in detail how prairies function, what different species and communities make up grasslands, threats to grasslands in Saskatchewan, and innovative conservation projects that are helping to conserve and restore these precious places.
