Founded in 1979, the New Mexico Mental Health Counselors Association (NMMHCA), AMHCA’s New Mexico division, counselors in agencies, community centers, private practice, and prevention settings, promoting high standards and quality care for all ages.

Session Description:The state of New Mexico has a higher than average concentration of veterans than other states. The need for mental health treatment of this population has grown in the last 20 years leading to a greater demand for services than the traditional support systems in the military and Veterans Administration (VA) are designed to handle. This has placed a greater demand on non military aligned providers but what makes this population and the families who support them different? This training will work on giving you a basic overview of the military, the language, hierarchy and overall structure for building a basis to work with this population. There will also be resources given as well as links for those who wish to develop more skills to work with this population. Training Objectives: &nbsp;1. Participants will learn to distinguish between the different branches of the military and the differences between active duty, guard and reserve.&nbsp;2. Participants will be able to interpret and to recognize the various terms and specific language used in the military culture as well as how demands differ between civilian and military members. &nbsp;3. Participants will learn and have access to the various rank designations and will be able to distinguish the difference between enlisted and officer culture and the impact this has on patients. Lora then got her master&rsquo;s degree in Marriage and Family therapy and worked to bring my experience from working in hospitals, the public school system, and private settings to her work with individuals, couples, and families. After completing her master&rsquo;s, she sought additional training in the areas of substance abuse, trauma and couple&rsquo;s issues. She is additionally trained in the tier 1 SAMHSA modes for trauma: EMDR, CPT, and PE, but also continues to work to expand her training in emerging models and modalities including becoming RTM certified and having been training in tapping since the 90&rsquo;s. Lora is also trained in several substance abuse models including The Matrix Model, advanced training in MI, Seeking Safety (a dual diagnosis model), and the Sinclair Method, as well as other pharmacology assisted community-based treatment.Having completed a double major in my bachelor&rsquo;s degree with one area in cultural anthropology with an emphasis in religious studies, Lora works to be culturally sensitive and aware of the unique situations these issues can present in therapy. As she was raised in rural New Mexico and has lived abroad working for the army overseas. She endeavors to work to honor all cultural methods and ways of healing. Culturally Responsive Practice for Military Affiliated Clients

Trauma Informed Care Specific to Women
