There will be a Friday, May 8 workshop led by Shilpi Malinowski on Holding Multiple Truths: How Oral Historians Can Tell A Story From All Sides. Workshop spots are limited. Workshop description: Oral history offers deep empathy, showing us how it feels to walk in another's shoes. But sometimes, understanding a full story requires seeing it from multiple perspectives. How can oral historians find narrators to capture the full range of experience on delicate issues like immigration, community transformation, and displacement? In this workshop, author, journalist and oral historian Shilpi Malinowski will share her process for examining the gentrification of D.C. from all sides, including the displaced, newcomers, for-profit and nonprofit developers, those who feel disrespected, and those who are unsure if they belong. Then, attendees will have the chance to share their projects and we will brainstorm together to develop a narrative strategy for each project, identifying potential narrators who have experienced the same issue differently. Together, we can hold and reveal complicated truths. Be sure to select the workshop ticket to attend. Please notify OHMAR at conference.ohmar@gmail.com by April 27 if you need accommodations. A portion of conference registration proceeds goes to the Martha Ross Prize and all donations made to OHMAR via Zeffy will go to the Martha Ross Prize. Donations can also be made to OHMAR via PayPal.
