Rio Hondo Artists' Residency fosters artistic collaboration by connecting dance artists with local creators in Taos, New Mexico. They emphasize community engagement and the creative process, aiming to build meaningful connections through art.

Join us for First Edition, a celebratory evening of dance, art, collaboration, and community at the Wildflower Playhouse!&nbsp; First Edition&nbsp;is the culmination of the first annual Rio Hondo Artists&#39; Residency and highlights the choreographic works-in-progress the artists have been researching for almost two weeks.&nbsp; RHAR brings dance artists (residents) from across the country to Taos to work with artists who create in many different mediums and are local to the Upper Rio Grande Basin, where they will create work tied to this place &amp; its people.&nbsp; The resident artists also design community workshops, movement classes &amp; conversations that serve a dual purpose: to engage the community and invite people in to the arts-making process AND to allow the residents to collect community stories &amp; input that inform their work.&nbsp; We believe that offering people unique ways to connect creates more opportunities for people in our community to do better, together. Using art to build a dense network of interpersonal connections allows us all to more easily leverage the greatest strength we have in our small town; people power. _________ Doors open at 6:30pm.&nbsp;Performance begins at 7:00pm. Reception with snacks, drinks, and artwork to puruse before and after the show!&nbsp; _________ There will also be the opportunity to share your thoughts &amp; impressions of the evening &amp; the art with RHAR on video, only if you wish to do so.&nbsp;Collected comments may be used in RHAR&#39;s First Edition documentary.

First Edition (a works-in-progress showcase)

Join us for First Edition, an evening of dance, art, collaboration, and community at the Wildflower Playhouse celebrating the culmination of the first annual Rio Hondo Artists&#39; Residency (RHAR) and showcasing the choreographic works-in-progress developed by our artists over the last eleven days. The purpose of RHAR is to dive deeply into creating something truly based in this place. We do not expect our artists to produce a finished product, but to engage with the process, local artists, the community, and the land in &amp; around Taos, ultimately creating something real and meaningful. To do this, we bring dance artists from across the country, who have a strong connection to Northern New Mexico, to Taos. They work with local artists who create in many different mediums to lay the foundation for a new dance-based performance piece, while also designing community workshops that serve the dual purposes of engaging the community in to the arts-making process AND acting as research opportunities for the artists to collect stories &amp; input to inform their work. We believe that offering people unique ways to connect creates more opportunities for people in our community to do better, together. Using art to build a dense network of interpersonal connections allows us all to more easily leverage the greatest strength we have in our small town: people power. We invite you to join us as we celebrate RHAR&rsquo;s first contribution towards a more interconnected arts community and look forward to what comes next. Doors open at 6:30pm. Choreographic showcase begins at 7:00pm. Reception with snacks, drinks, and artwork to peruse before and after. Tickets are by a suggested donation of $10 per person. We will not turn anyone away for lack of funds. There is limited seating.

First Edition

This class is an open invitation to dance, move, sweat, learn and connect. No prior dance experience is required and all ages are welcome to participate.&nbsp; Please wear athletic clothing. **CLASSES ARE IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS**&nbsp;Participants taking both classes will experience what it is like for dancers to go from studio to stage. The first workshop will be held in Ballet Taos&#39; studios, and the second workshop will be held onstage at Taos Community Auditorium. Zachariah Bigbee approaches art like a river that stretches from pre-history into the distant future; what we do upstream affects every moment after that. This is why he uses his deep knowledge of ancient traditions as a guide to create work that reveals our best possible future.&nbsp;

RHAR Community Workshop: Open Movement Offering

Interactive rehearsals are an open invitation for community members and artists to observe dancers in rehearsal.&nbsp;Much as a painter would have an open studio where the public could walk in and watch them paint, we invite you into the studio to watch dancers create new movement, and to respond to what you observe with your own art.&nbsp; We will provide art supplies for. No prior art experience is necessary and participation is art-making is completely optional and you are welcome to stay as long or as short a time as you&#39;d like!&nbsp; Please park behind the Wildflower in the dirt lot. ART HOUR at the Wildflower Playhouse

If you have other mediums you&#39;d like to work with during the rehearsal time, we invite you to attend an interactive rehearsal at the Harwood Museum on June 23rd &amp; 24th. RHAR Interactive Rehearsals at the Wildflower Playhouse

Earth Talk&nbsp;&nbsp;is a workshop offering a space where writing, conversation and movement become a way of reflecting on our individual and communal relationships with the land.&nbsp; No prior movement experience is needed to participate. This workshop aims to provide space and time for individuals to reflect and verbalize why our relationship to the land is important, what is happening now that is threatening our relationship and the future we hope for.&nbsp; If you are willing, the words and stories shared by participants during this workshop will serve as research and material for a poem by Melanie Saunders that will Anaka&#39;s choreographic creation for RHAR. Anaka Weiss-Jones seeks to understand perspectives of spirituality, religion, the earth, and humanity through conversations and research. She believes strongly that there is a symbiotic relationship that comes from embracing these elements as parts of a whole, and that the cycle of symbiosis breaks down when the same are abandoned, and so her work for RHAR begins with an open mind, seeking to learn more about the relationships and stories of and between the land and community from the people who make their lives in this beautiful place.

RHAR Community Conversation Workshop: Earth Talk

Rio Hondo Artists&#39; Residency is built on the belief that the best art is created through community and collaboration. As we navigate our first year, we want to lay the groundwork for 2027 and beyond, and that means finding out what artists need!&nbsp; We (Zac, Athena &amp; Anaka) are dancers and because we&#39;ve grown up in the dance studio, we know how to support dancers and foster a space for choreographic exploration. What we don&#39;t know is how best to support artists whose mediums are paint or clay, jewelry or words, clothing or instruments, puppets or song, digital art or film, (and much more!)&nbsp; We would love to have a conversation about what you need to be your most creative so that we can support all of RHAR&#39;s artists to the best of our abilities.&nbsp; We are seeking input from artists of any medium who:&nbsp;<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">are local to Taos and the surrounding region&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">have always wanted to work with dance</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">who value collaboration and community involvement as part of their creative process</li></ul> If this is you, please consider joining us for a conversation at tea.o.graphy! Love Letters at Sunset&nbsp;is a writing workshop inviting movement, play, and presence to use writing as a healing tool. This series will serve as an open invitation to the community to write, share, tell stories, and serve as research for her dance making process. Athena Dunleavy&rsquo;s work for the Rio Hondo Artists&rsquo; Residency explores storytelling, memory, and conversation through dance as ritual. Creating oneness as a living, breathing, evolving, piece that reflects the community, the land, the people, and the audience as a part of the dance. Her process seeks to explore the fine-line between everyday mundanity and the space where the divine breaths when observed; allowing something bigger than herself to move.
