Dancemakers

LXCL:Dancemakers considers the context of how dance is presented.

Curated by Purawai VyasSupported by DancemakersCo-presented by Shvas Dance Company 5pm-10pm | Canvas of Collaboration with Live Music by Vrunda Upadhyay Garba Ensemble and Garba Performances by Local Artists Step into the circle and become part of the artwork.Inspired by the vibrant Gujarati folk tradition of Garba, RangaMandal is an immersive participatory experience where dance, community, and visual art come together. Throughout the evening, participants dance barefoot on a large painted canvas, transforming each step into vibrant layers of colour, pattern, and texture. As the circle grows, individual movements weave together to create a striking collective mandala—an artwork born from rhythm, celebration, and shared presence. Rooted in the spirit of Garba, RangaMandal celebrates connection, renewal, and belonging while reimagining ritual through a contemporary artistic lens. Blurring the boundaries between performer and participant, dance and visual art, the experience invites everyone to contribute to something larger than themselves. The finished canvas becomes a lasting record of the community that gathered, danced, and created together—a beautiful reminder that every movement leaves its mark. Come dance to live music, enjoy inspiring Garba performances by talented local artists, and share in free food as we celebrate culture, creativity, and community. What to know before you come:

This is a barefoot experience.

We use washable, non-toxic paint that is safe for participants.

Please wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little paint on.

No dance experience is necessary—everyone is welcome!

Soil Study (2024) is an ongoing series by artist sarah koekkoek of discursive experiments, processes, interventions and conversations between the human body and soil/soil memory. sarah has been deeply engaged in these explorations over the past 3 years, working through an array of artistic mediums including sculpture, photography, screen printing, movement, choreography, digital GIFs and ASCII art. Much like our bodies, soil hosts ecological life, political struggles and cultural memory through slow accumulation, care and violence. This presentation of a process based performance is situated on the ancestral lands of many First Nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat. The audience is invited to witness a weaving together of personal memories etched into mine and the performers bodies together with 9,000 years of collective, historical and biological narratives of soil bodies. These memories, embedded in both human and soil archives, collide, converge, resist, mourn, celebrate and repair in unison. Engaging with soil in this way means confronting questions of repair, responsibility, and futurity. Together we resist the damage of industrial, agricultural and colonial extraction. Manifesting alternative time scales, where like the soil, we accumulate memory through repetition, sedimentation and decay. Curated by Holly ChangChoreographed by sarah koekkoekPerformed by sarah koekkeok & Eve TagnyOutside eye support by Amanda Acorn & Aisha Sasha John There are other events offered in conjunction with Soil Study

Walking High Park with photographer Zackery Hobler, participants will be shown evidence of prescribed burning, they will gain an understanding of how the process works, and be shown how it concretely benefits the rare black oak savannah of High Park. Starting near Hawk Hill, the group will walk through some of the burn blocks, delineated in partnership with the City of Toronto and Lands & Forest Management, the forestry service who started the prescribed burn program in High Park in 1997, whom Hobler has partnered with for the creation of his photobook. The walk will end near the north end of High Park next to Bloor Street where participants will see two very different aspects of the park: markers of poor forest management and markers of abundant biodiversity, the latter of which prescribed burning is fundamental. Throughout the walk, participants will be encouraged to ask questions as we walk. Participants are also encouraged to attend the two other events surrounding Hobler’s photobook: his book launch at the Contact Gallery on April 9 and his talk with the City of Toronto Archives on May 9. More information about those events can be found linked below. Curated by Holly ChangThis workshop is offered in conjunction with Soil Study by sarah koekkoek

Dance&Freedom is an intensive four-session workshop that blends sorcerer-inspired movement with contemporary dance practices to explore embodying resistance. Open to both trained dancers and non-dancers, the workshop examines how dance and the human body have been suppressed across cultures and how they continue to re-emerge as powerful tools for freedom. ~A NOTE ABOUT TICKETS~This workshop is designed to be experienced as 4 consecutive weekly sessions leading up to a final goal. If you are not able to attend all four, please email artistic@dancemakers.org for single session tickets. What to expect: Each session includes learning movement vocabularies, lectures, verbal exercises, writing, structured and play-based improvisation, and discussion, concluding with prompts for the next session. Participants dance, record, watch, and reflect together while having dedicated time to build networks, enjoy themselves, and connect socially. Time in process: The workshop consists of three 3-hour sessions and one seven-hour shooting day with professional cameras, lighting, and live music, giving participants the opportunity to experience the differences between dancing for the camera and for a live audience. A short dance video serves as the artistic outcome. Dance&Freedom offers a unique opportunity to explore contemporary dance, creative embodiment, and somatic awareness. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of movement as storytelling, resilience, and artistic expression, while contributing to a collaborative, visually compelling project that celebrates the body’s capacity to resist, reclaim, and transform. This work was made possible through ArtWorksTO, in partnership with City of Toronto, Toronto Arts Foundation and OCAD University.

What are earth pigments? How do we find and process them? Join us for a hands-on paint-making workshop! In this session, the participants will learn how to process raw earth materials by grinding, washing and drying to achieve fine pigments that are suitable for paint-making. Together we will investigate both natural and waste colour sources in our surrounding area to find ochre (iron-oxide earth pigment). During the first half of the workshop, the artist Gizem Candan will demonstrate the full process of pigment and paint-making. Then, the participants will have the chance to make their own water-colour paint using fine earth pigments and gum arabic solution. Participants will also receive handouts with detailed explanations of the paint-making process, including a basic recipe, a list of materials, and some safety instructions. Making Soil Into Paint

Guests are invited to gather for a relaxed afternoon of visiting at High Park. Grounded in relational practices, the gathering offers intentional time for connection and community. Spending time together on the land, especially within urban city centres, is incredibly important in these trying times, and this gathering intentionally creates room to slow down and enjoy food, joy, and laughter in kinship. Alex Jacobs-Blum will share about her artistic practice and participants are welcome to share their own stories, listen, and simply spend time together without pressure or expectations…except having fun! Alex Jacobs-Blum will share about her most recent body of work, Living and Lost Connections, which documents her return to her ancestral homelands and reflects on the responsibilities that come with carrying ancestral Haudenosaunee knowledge. The land holds memory and history, and her artistic practice has become a way of listening and paying attention to those teachings while visiting the territory of her Gayogohó:nǫʼ ancestors. Through visual storytelling, her work explores how spending time on land can guide us to remember, reconnect, and carry knowledge forward for future generations. This interactive workshop invites participants into an exploration of abolition, its roots and branches, first as a political framework, and then as creative and imaginative practice. Grounded in the belief that building a world rooted in care, accountability, community, and refusal to acquiesce to imperial, capitalist, and oppressive system of the (in)justice system(s) requires radical imagination— we turn and connect to Hip Hop through dance, which in its rhythms and improvisation, mirrors our movements towards abolition as a powerful tool for visioning and building new futures. PART ONE, Facilitated by Furqan Mohamed: Participants will engage in a mix of guided and group and reflective journaling. This part of the workshop will create space to unpack and outline core abolitionist ideas—drawing from the work of historic organizers, neighbours, thinkers, and artists—and explore how these concepts show up in our everyday lives. Through writing prompts and dialogue, we’ll reflect on questions like: What does safety mean to you? To your kin? What does “justice” really mean? How can we perform acts of abolition in our everyday? What would we need to give up, and make room for? What do we need to be healing from, and what are we moving toward, together? PART TWO, Facilitated by Kosi C Ese: Kosi's workshop titled ‘No Half-Steppin’ is a nod to the infamous Big Daddy Kane ‘Ain’t No Half Steppin’ which makes a case for playfulness in rhyme and adaptability in and around structure within hip-hop. The title also points to staying clear of hesitation informally. A closer reading of Hip-Hop freestyle dance presents the idea that "hip is to be in the know and hop is the movement we create with said knowledge". Participants will engage in guided freestyle exercises to Hip-Hop music and use concepts of play and improvisation to generate conviction in the body. This portion will invite us to reflect on how we move forward and build the abolitionist futures we desire by going backwards to gain the necessary context.
