Friendship Community Center Inc

Friendship Community Center Inc fosters connections and empowers individuals through diverse programs, promoting community engagement, support, and personal growth for all ages.

Join us for a night of music, and conversation with guitarist and composer Nathan Salsburg and farmer and writer Nic Theisen. This is the second in the series “In Good Company,” pairing local musicians and artists (be they visual artists, poet, dancer, or writer). Each evening will explore how different disciplines see and influence each other and how our shared place is refracted through each unique lens. With host Joan Shelley, we will explore the challenges and gifts of creating and working in northern Michigan. In Good Company is one of the ongoing events being offered by the Friendship Community Center of Suttons Bay with the goal of providing art and entertainment that is affordable for the whole community. Since 2011, when the first of his eight solo albums was released, he has quietly established a style marked by a depth and a complexity wholly his own, drawing on abiding interests in minimalism, rural American vernacular musics, and the work of British folk revivalists like Dick Gaughan, Dolly Collins, and Nic Jones. He’s a frequent collaborator Chicago multi-instrumentalist James Elkington andsongwriter-singer Joan Shelley. For 20 years Salsburg served as curator of the digital Alan Lomax Archive and has been twice nominated for Grammy awards in the Best historical reissue and Best Liner Notes categories. He has contributed to recordings by Shirley Collins, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, the Weather Station, and Jake Xerxes Fussell, among others. Nic Theisen is a farmer, writer, and general tinkerer. Alongside his wife Sara, he farms Loma (a small-scale vegetable farm in Leelanau county) and is co-owner of Farm Club. Milling, baking, preserving, building & designing, landscaping, cooking, developing recipes, designing packaging, etc., this is his latest, grandest art project. Writing the weekly letters and recipes that go out with their boxes of vegetables, Nic has a distinct style that humorously reflects the life of the food and the toil and devotion it requires. Emily Oakes of Traverse, Northern Michigan's magazine writes, "Nic Theisen is an artist, and the earth is his medium. He sculpts soil into sustenance and embroiders landscapes into foliage. When a farm is your canvas, you learn to appreciate the transience of each carefully-tended masterpiece. They sprout, bloom, wither and decay; a cycle of triumph and surrender across seasons of sun and snow."
