The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research on microphysiological systems (MPSs) to model type 2 diabetes.&nbsp;Advances in biomaterials, microfluidics, and tissue engineering have resulted in MPSs that allow for greater control of three-dimensional cell cultures containing multiple cell types and constituting more physiological tissue organization. The utility of these systems lends themselves to powerful in vitro modeling of metabolic tissue crosstalk, study of basic mechanisms of human type 2 diabetes, and the testing of prevention and treatment strategies. MPSs are especially useful for investigating the heterogeneity of human T2D biology and clinical responses. The current initiative will support small pilot studies to conceptualize aspects of T2D biology for modeling with MPSs, to support feasibility studies, and to generate preliminary data.&nbsp;Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.&nbsp;Collaborative investigations combining expertise in bioengineering, type 2 diabetes biology, and human metabolism will be encouraged and these investigators should begin considering applying for this application.&nbsp;

Collaborative Awards to Support Microphysiological System Pilot Studies in Type 2 Diabetes Research

Diabetes&nbsp;has&nbsp;become&nbsp;a major&nbsp;public&nbsp;health&nbsp;challenge due&nbsp;to&nbsp;its high&nbsp;prevalence&nbsp;and&nbsp;chronic&nbsp;nature,&nbsp;with many individuals managing the condition for decades.&nbsp;One major challenge in diabetes is the enormous heterogeneity&nbsp;associated&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;disease,&nbsp;which&nbsp;necessitates&nbsp;personalized&nbsp;approaches&nbsp;to&nbsp;its&nbsp;prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.&nbsp;To address this, the research field has generated a large amount of complex data, and has accumulated vast prior knowledge about the disease.&nbsp;These data and prior knowledge&nbsp;contain&nbsp;critical,&nbsp;but&nbsp;mostly&nbsp;hidden,&nbsp;information&nbsp;relevant&nbsp;to&nbsp;solving&nbsp;this&nbsp;challenge.&nbsp;However, major hurdles exist in integrating them and extracting predictive signals, including a lack of data science expertise in the diabetes research field and the absence of diabetes-specific data science and AI expert systems, models, and tools. This initiative proposes to address these issues by establishing a pilot&nbsp;funding&nbsp;program&nbsp;that&nbsp;leverages&nbsp;the&nbsp;emerging&nbsp;opportunities&nbsp;from&nbsp;recent&nbsp;data&nbsp;science&nbsp;and&nbsp;AI&nbsp;advances.&nbsp;It will&nbsp;recruit&nbsp;multidisciplinary&nbsp;teams&nbsp;that&nbsp;include&nbsp;both&nbsp;diabetes&nbsp;and&nbsp;data&nbsp;science&nbsp;experts,&nbsp;to&nbsp;(1)&nbsp;develop&nbsp;AI foundation models for diabetes; (2) validate the models with top research questions in diabetes heterogeneity; (3) disseminate the models and engagement the community for further development, validation and application, and; (4) develop use cases that demonstrate models’ potential in accelerating the&nbsp;tempo&nbsp;of&nbsp;research.&nbsp;The&nbsp;expected&nbsp;outcomes&nbsp;include&nbsp;the&nbsp;integration&nbsp;of&nbsp;new&nbsp;AI&nbsp;experts&nbsp;into&nbsp;the diabetes&nbsp;research&nbsp;workforce,&nbsp;the&nbsp;creation&nbsp;of&nbsp;AI&nbsp;models&nbsp;that&nbsp;the&nbsp;average&nbsp;diabetes&nbsp;researcher&nbsp;can&nbsp;use,&nbsp;and informative use cases demonstrating the models' potential.All applications will be peer-reviewed and only meritorious applications will be considered for funding.&nbsp;

The NHLBI intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research on expanding the scope of an international cardiac surgery research platform, which already includes interventional cardiology, and peri-operative care of cardiac patients. Other areas of HLBS research will be incorporated, including dissemination and implementation science, circadian medicine, and mechanistic science efforts. The predominantly public investment that created this platform will continue to utilize additional sources of funding that allow broad stakeholders, including academia, small businesses, professional societies, foundations and international research entities to collaborate and advance newer techniques, technologies, devices, and innovative pharmaceutical and bioengineered products, as well as strategies to accelerate their reach and integration, to improve the health of adults with cardiovascular disease and associated neurologic complications. Further, this enhanced platform will be used to train the next generation of clinical trialists and implementation researchers centrally.&nbsp;&nbsp; Applications are not being solicited at this time. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks to advance its mission by continuing support of the Coccidioidomycosis Collaborative Research Centers (CCRCs). The CCRCs are highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary, research centers that conduct clinical and translational research to support the development of a vaccine to combat coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), a serious and difficult to treat fungal infection endemic in many regions of the United States. Activities to be supported align with the NIAID strategic plan for research to develop a Valley fever vaccine and include (1) addressing gaps in basic Coccidioides research, (2) development of tools and resources, and (3) development of a preventative vaccine. The expectation is that the multi-disciplinary centers will leverage unique research resources and patient populations from endemic regions to advance the field. Grant authorities that allow NIAID to forecast this opportunity are as follows: Sections 301 and 405 of the Public Health Service Act as amended (42 USC 241 and 284) and under Federal Regulations 42 CFR Part 52 and 2 CFR Part 200.
