We make annual grants to 501(c)3 organizations in Eastern Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and Western North Carolina. Our primary interests are serving the needs of vulnerable young people; we also fund education, cultural enrichment, and spiritual development.

Mooneyhan Family Foundation Grants

The Community Foundation's annual Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) Grant is a $10,000 award selected by local high school students for nonprofit-led projects that are youth-led, actively involve youth, or directly serve young people in the region.

Must be a nonprofit organization serving the City of Fredericksburg or the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, or King George, VA | Proposal must be youth-led, actively involve youth in implementation, or directly serve and benefit young people in the region

Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) Grant

Funds organizations working to change policies, power structures and other root causes so that all North Carolinians can lead fulfilling lives.

Be a charitable, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, college/university, religious entity, or government unit | Use the grant for work that serves the people of North Carolina | ZSR is legally prohibited from funding voter registration | No funding for work that supports or opposes individual candidates or influences election outcomes | Does not fund academic and medical research | Does not fund capital campaigns, building projects, or renovations | Does not fund conferences, seminars, symposiums, fundraising events, civic clubs, or endowment funds | Does not fund equipment, furniture, computer purchases, land purchases, plant species preservation, or historic preservation | Does not fund projects that focus exclusively on direct services (e.g., shelters, health care) or payment of debts | Overhead and indirect costs for colleges and universities, scholarships, and private business ventures are not funded

State-Level Systemic Change

THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES SMALL GRANTS ($250-$2000) TO NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND IN SOME CASES, INDIVIDUALS DEMONSTRATING NEED TO IMPROVE FUTURE OUTCOMES.

Letter of inquiry (LOI) required | Applicant resume required | Proposed budget for expenditure of potential grant funds required | Documentary proof of non-profit IRS tax-exempt status (if applicable) | Non-profit prior year and current year-to-date balance sheet and income statement (if applicable) | Must be a qualifying distribution recipient per IRS 501(c)(3) and exempt under 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) (for organizational applicants)

Small Grants Program

Annual award recognizing work that strengthens or reimagines psychoanalysis; accepts individuals, teams, and organizations and honors completed work from the most recent decade.

Work submitted must have been created between 2016 and 2025 (most recent decade).

Sigourney Award

Invests in initiatives that expand access to high-quality financial education (especially for youth and young adults) and build educator capacity; supports creative approaches to advancing financial literacy.

Must be a charitable organization with a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status provided by the IRS | Must comply with The Charles Schwab Corporation's nondiscrimination policy | Not eligible: Individuals | Not eligible: Private foundations | Not eligible: Individual pre-K–12 schools or school-related activities at individual schools | Not eligible: Booster clubs, bands, or athletic teams/leagues | Not eligible: Organizations that are political in nature | Not eligible: Private clubs and fraternal or social organizations

Schwab Moneywise Momentum Grants

Supports efforts to improve people's lives through the arts; research and innovations in health care; education and programs to help at-risk youth; and to promote enhanced economic achievement.

Must be a qualifying tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization | LOI required (250 words or less) and must be accompanied by a copy of the IRS 501(c)(3) designation | Grants will not be made for political purposes | No grants to support endowment campaigns | No grants to organizations which discriminate on the basis of race, ethnic origin, sexual or religious preference, age or gender | No grants to religious organizations for religious purposes
