Squarespace Donations: What UK Charities Actually Pay in 2026

July 3, 2026
TL;DR — The Short Answer

Running donations through Squarespace costs UK charities more than the plan price suggests, and leaves Gift Aid unclaimed on every pound raised.

  • Squarespace charges 20% UK VAT on subscriptions, which most charities cannot reclaim.
  • The Business plan adds a 3% transaction fee on top of Stripe's 1.5% + 20p per donation.
  • Squarespace does not capture Gift Aid declarations, so a £25,000 campaign could miss £6,250 in HMRC reclaims.
  • Zeffy is free for charities: no platform fee, no transaction fee, built-in Gift Aid handling, raffle ticketing, and regular giving, at no cost.

Running donations through Squarespace costs more than most UK charities expect. Plan fees, VAT, and payment processing fees stack up quickly. On £25,000 in annual donations through Squarespace's Business plan, you are paying over £1,000 in combined fees that never reach your cause. And that figure does not include the Gift Aid your charity cannot reclaim because Squarespace has no native Gift Aid declaration capture.

This guide breaks down every cost tier in £, shows what you actually get for the money, and explains when a purpose-built fundraising platform makes more sense than a website builder with a donation block bolted on.

In this article:

Squarespace pricing plans for UK charities

Squarespace offers four paid plans. Here is what each one costs and what it includes. Prices are billed annually and exclude 20% UK VAT, which Squarespace charges on all UK subscriptions. Verify current GBP pricing at squarespace.com/en-gb/pricing before committing, as UK prices are updated periodically.

PlanMonthly price (billed annually, exc. VAT)Transaction feeDonations supported?
Personal~£13/moNot applicableNo
Business~£17/mo3% per transactionYes
Basic Commerce~£23/mo0%Yes
Advanced Commerce~£42/mo0%Yes, with recurring giving

Note: UK prices shown are approximate and subject to change. Confirm live pricing at squarespace.com/en-gb/pricing. All plans attract 20% UK VAT, which most charities cannot reclaim.

The Personal plan does not include payment processing, so you cannot accept donations on it. The real entry point for donation collection is the Business plan, which carries a 3% transaction fee on every gift.

To avoid that 3% transaction fee, you need Basic Commerce. At roughly £23/month billed annually, that is approximately £276 per year just for a donation page, before processing fees or VAT.

Important for UK charities: Squarespace charges 20% VAT on subscriptions. Most registered charities cannot reclaim this VAT, so the effective annual cost of Basic Commerce is closer to £330. That is a genuine cost line a UK charity budget will feel.

The charity discount reality

Squarespace offers a discount for charities and community organisations. Here is how to get it:

  • 2. At checkout, enter the code NONPROFIT to receive 10% off your first payment. Confirm this code is still active at the UK checkout before building your site around it, as promotional codes can change.

That is the full extent of the discount.

A few things worth knowing before you proceed:

  • The 10% discount applies to your first payment only. It does not renew.
  • On the Business plan billed annually, 10% off means you save roughly £20 in year one. After that, you pay full price.
  • On Basic Commerce billed annually, you save roughly £28 in year one.
  • There is no ongoing registered-charity rate, no verified charity-registration discount, and no additional pricing breaks for small organisations or CICs.

UK charities are accustomed to substantive sector discounts: Charity Digital Exchange offers major software products at reduced or zero cost to registered charities, and CAF Bank provides fee-free banking to many smaller organisations. Against that benchmark, a one-off first-payment saving of roughly £20 reads thin, and it does nothing to reduce what you pay in year two, three, or beyond.

WordPress.org is free software, though it carries its own hosting costs, and requires more technical maintenance than Squarespace.

Total cost of ownership: what you actually pay

The plan fee is only part of the story. Every donation processed through Squarespace also incurs:

  • Squarespace transaction fee: 3% on the Business plan (0% on Basic Commerce and above)
  • Payment processing fee: 1.5% + 20p per transaction via Stripe for standard UK cards (verify at stripe.com/en-gb/pricing)
  • 20% VAT on your Squarespace subscription, which most charities cannot reclaim

Here is what the combined cost looks like across three donation volume tiers. Estimates assume an average donation of £40 and use Stripe's standard UK card rate of 1.5% + 20p per transaction.

Annual donationsSquarespace Business (plan + 3% fee + processing)Squarespace Basic Commerce (plan + processing, 0% fee)Zeffy
£5,000~£570~£390£0
£25,000~£1,450~£720£0
£100,000~£4,730~£2,170£0

Plan costs include approximate VAT. Processing estimates assume average donation of £40. Verify current Stripe UK rate at stripe.com/en-gb/pricing before publishing financial projections.

On £25,000 in annual donations through Squarespace's Business plan, you are paying roughly £1,450 in combined fees. Switch to Basic Commerce and you cut that to around £720. Use Zeffy and you pay nothing.

Those are not abstract numbers. At £25,000 in donations, the difference between Squarespace Business and Zeffy is over £1,400 per year.

Gift Aid: the biggest hidden cost of Squarespace donations

Before you weigh plan fees against processing fees, there is a larger figure UK charities need to confront.

Gift Aid allows your charity to reclaim 25p from HMRC for every £1 donated by a UK taxpayer (HMRC Gift Aid guidance). A £100 donation becomes £125 to your cause at no extra cost to the donor.

To claim it, your charity must capture a Gift Aid declaration at the point of donation: the donor's full name, home address, the charity's name, and confirmation that the donor has paid enough UK income or capital gains tax. Declarations must be stored for six years, and claims submitted via HMRC Charities Online. The claim window is four years from the end of the financial period the donation was received.

Squarespace's donation block does not capture Gift Aid declarations. It does not store declarations, and it has no integration with HMRC Charities Online.

On £25,000 of eligible donations, that is up to £6,250 left on the table each year. That single figure dwarfs every plan and processing fee combined, and it compounds year on year.

For a UK charity evaluating Squarespace as a donation tool, Gift Aid is not a footnote. It is the central question.

Should you even be running donations through your website builder?

That cost gap points to a more fundamental question: is a website builder the right tool for fundraising?

Squarespace was built to help people publish websites. The donation block is a feature added on top of that core purpose. When you run donations through Squarespace, you are paying website-builder pricing to do fundraising work and missing the infrastructure that UK fundraising actually requires.

A small UK charity running a £15 fete ticket sale, an autumn appeal donate page, a Christmas raffle, and a sponsored 5K currently pays Ticket Tailor, JustGiving, Crowdfunder, and Beacon or Donorfy alongside a Squarespace subscription. Squarespace serves the website well. It cannot replace any of those fundraising tools.

Purpose-built fundraising platforms are designed around the donor lifecycle: capturing gifts, handling Gift Aid, retaining supporters, and reporting on campaigns. Squarespace does none of that natively.

UK charities evaluating alternatives would reasonably consider:

  • JustGiving (household name; the donor tip prompt of around 17% is widely criticised and is the most complained-about pattern in UK fundraising commentary)
  • CAF Donate (trust-first, low flair, used by 8,000+ charities, backed by the Charities Aid Foundation)
  • Wonderful.org (genuine 0% via Open Banking; converts well with younger donors, less well with those unfamiliar with bank app authentication)
  • Zeffy (0% platform fee, built-in Gift Aid handling, event ticketing, raffles, memberships, and regular giving in one free platform)

If your website is primarily a presence and communications tool and donations are secondary, Squarespace is a reasonable choice for the website part. If fundraising is central to why you are building an online presence, you are paying more for less by running donations through Squarespace.

Trust signals UK donors expect

UK donors look for specific signals before they give: a registered charity number (Charity Commission for England and Wales), the Fundraising Regulator badge, and Gift Aid handling. The Code of Fundraising Practice (effective 1 November 2025, with Section 9 covering online platforms) sets the expectations every UK donation platform should meet.

A Squarespace donation block surfaces none of these trust signals by default. Zeffy donation pages support Gift Aid declaration capture and UK GDPR-compliant donor data handling, and your charity's registered number and Fundraising Regulator affiliation can be displayed on your donation page.

Here is how Zeffy, used by over 100,000 charities globally, compares on the features that determine real UK fundraising cost:

If you are already using Squarespace for your website, you do not have to choose between the two. You can embed Zeffy's donation forms directly into your Squarespace site. Your website stays on Squarespace. Your donations stay fee-free on Zeffy.

That means you get the design tools you want and keep every pound you raise. Zeffy also includes built-in supporter management, automatic donation acknowledgements, regular giving campaigns, peer-to-peer fundraising, event ticketing, raffles, and memberships at no cost, with no integrations to manage.

Which plan should your charity choose?

If you are set on using Squarespace for donations, here is a plain recommendation.

Do not use the Business plan for donation collection. The 3% transaction fee is too costly. On any meaningful donation volume, you will pay more in transaction fees alone than the cost difference between Business and Basic Commerce.

Most charities should choose Basic Commerce at minimum if they want to accept donations through Squarespace. At roughly £23/month billed annually (approximately £330 per year including VAT), it eliminates the transaction fee. You still pay Stripe processing on every donation, but you are not double-paying.

Advanced Commerce at roughly £42/month (approximately £600 per year including VAT) adds subscription-style recurring giving, but that is a significant jump for features most charities can access free elsewhere, including through Zeffy.

The Personal plan cannot accept donations at all. Do not choose it expecting to fundraise.

One additional consideration for unincorporated community groups and CICs: if your organisation cannot claim Gift Aid because you are not HMRC-recognised, the fee maths matters even more. You cannot soften Squarespace's processing cut with a 25% HMRC top-up. Every fee comes directly out of what you raise.

The honest answer: for most UK charities, even Basic Commerce is an expensive way to host a donation form when zero-fee alternatives with built-in Gift Aid handling exist. It makes sense if you need a full website with donation capability in one platform and Gift Aid is not a priority. It does not make sense if fundraising and Gift Aid are central to why you are building an online presence.

How to accept donations on Squarespace

Once you have chosen a plan that supports payments (Business, Basic Commerce, or Advanced Commerce), setting up a donation block is straightforward.

Connect a payment processor

Link Squarespace Payments, Stripe, or PayPal to your account. You will need one of these to accept donations. Stripe is the most commonly used option for UK charities on Squarespace.

Add a donation block

  • 1. Open the page editor in your Squarespace account.
  • 2. Navigate to the page where you want the donation form to appear, such as your homepage, a dedicated giving page, or a campaign page.
  • 3. Click to add a new block and select "Donation" from the block library.

Configure your donation settings

  • 1. Edit the donate button text to match your charity's mission and voice.
  • 2. Set suggested donation amounts (fixed options such as £10, £25, £50) or leave the amount open for donors to choose.
  • 3. Enable recurring donations through Stripe if your plan supports it. Note that this is Stripe-only and does not support Direct Debit, which accounts for a significant share of regular giving by UK charity donors.

Collect donor information

  • 1. Add form fields for donor names, email addresses, and any other details you need for your records.
  • 2. Keep the form short. Fewer fields mean higher completion rates.
  • 3. If you plan to claim Gift Aid separately, you will need to collect a donor's home address and Gift Aid consent outside Squarespace's standard donation block, as no native Gift Aid declaration field exists.

Set up thank-you emails

  • 1. Configure automated donation acknowledgements through Squarespace's email notification settings.
  • 2. Personalise the message to reflect your charity's voice and include your registered charity number.

That is the complete setup. The process is accessible for new users. The limitations show up later, when you need features Squarespace was not built to provide.

What Squarespace can't do for UK fundraising

Squarespace is a website builder. It has donation features, but it was not designed around the fundraising workflow a UK charity actually needs. Here is where the gaps appear.

No Gift Aid handling. HMRC requires a Gift Aid declaration captured at the point of donation: the donor's full name, home address, charity name, and confirmation that they have paid sufficient UK tax. Declarations must be stored for six years and claims submitted via HMRC Charities Online (HMRC Gift Aid guidance). Squarespace does none of this. A £100 donation stays £100 instead of becoming £125. On meaningful donation volumes, this is the single largest cost of using a website builder for fundraising.

No small-society-lottery workflow. Under the Gambling Act 2005, most UK charity raffles are small society lotteries and must be registered with the local licensing authority (Gambling Commission guidance). Registration costs £40 initially and £20 to renew annually. A single draw is capped at £20,000 in ticket sales, the annual aggregate across all draws at £250,000, and the maximum single prize at £25,000. At least 20% of proceeds must go to the cause. Squarespace has no raffle ticketing, no proceeds tracking, and no compliance prompts for any of this. Zeffy handles raffle ticketing natively.

No built-in supporter management. You can export a list of donors, but Squarespace has no tools for tracking giving history, segmenting supporters, or managing relationships over time. Meaningful donor retention requires a separate CRM or spreadsheet system on top of your Squarespace subscription.

No campaign management tools. Squarespace does not offer fundraising thermometers, campaign progress tracking, or the urgency-driving features that lift donation conversion rates on time-bound appeals.

No peer-to-peer fundraising. If you want supporters to create their own fundraising pages for a sponsored event or campaign, Squarespace cannot do it. This is a standard feature on purpose-built fundraising platforms.

Transaction fees on the entry-level donation plan. The only plan where you can accept donations without a transaction fee (Basic Commerce) costs approximately £330 per year including VAT. That is the floor, before a single pound of processing fees.

Direct Debit not supported. Direct Debit is the dominant UK regular-giving mechanism. Squarespace's recurring donation feature runs on Stripe card payments only and cannot offer Direct Debit, which is the standard expectation for UK monthly donors.

If your charity's website is primarily a presence and communications tool, Squarespace does that well. If fundraising is central to why you are building a website, you are using the wrong tool category.

Frequently asked questions

Does Squarespace offer an ongoing charity discount?

Squarespace offers a one-off 10% discount on your first payment using the code NONPROFIT at checkout. There is no ongoing charity rate, no verified registered-charity pricing tier, and no additional discount for small charities or community groups. After the first payment, you pay full price. Verify the code is still active at the UK checkout before building your site around it.

Can I use Zeffy with my existing Squarespace website?

Yes. You can embed Zeffy's donation forms directly into your Squarespace pages. Your website stays on Squarespace. Donations, Gift Aid handling, ticket sales, raffles, and regular giving all run through Zeffy at no cost. You do not need to rebuild your website or choose between design tools and fundraising infrastructure.

Which Squarespace plan is best for a charity that wants to accept donations?

Basic Commerce at a minimum. The Business plan's 3% transaction fee is too costly on any real donation volume. On £25,000 in annual donations, the Business plan costs roughly £750 more in transaction fees alone than Basic Commerce. Advanced Commerce adds recurring giving via Stripe, but most charities can access that feature free elsewhere. The Personal plan cannot accept donations at all.

Does Squarespace handle Gift Aid?

No. Squarespace does not capture a Gift Aid declaration at the point of donation, does not store declarations for the six-year HMRC retention requirement, and has no integration with HMRC Charities Online. To claim Gift Aid on donations collected through Squarespace, you would need to capture declarations separately (by post, email, or a separate form), maintain your own records for six years, and submit claims manually. On £25,000 of eligible donations, missing Gift Aid costs your charity up to £6,250 per year in unclaimed HMRC reclaims (HMRC Gift Aid guidance). Zeffy captures Gift Aid declarations natively, at no extra cost.

Can charities accept regular donations on Squarespace?

Yes, but only via Stripe card payments on the Advanced Commerce plan. Squarespace does not support Direct Debit, which is the dominant UK regular-giving mechanism and the standard expectation for monthly donors. If Direct Debit is important to your regular-giving programme, you will need a separate tool such as GoCardless integrated with a purpose-built fundraising platform. Zeffy includes regular giving campaigns with no plan upgrade required.

What is the real annual cost of using Squarespace for a charity raising £25,000 per year?

On the Business plan: roughly £1,450 per year in combined fees (plan, VAT, 3% transaction fee, Stripe processing at 1.5% + 20p per transaction). On Basic Commerce: roughly £720 per year (plan, VAT, Stripe processing). On Zeffy: £0. But those figures exclude the Gift Aid opportunity cost. On £25,000 of eligible donations, not having Gift Aid handling means up to £6,250 per year in unclaimed HMRC reclaims. That is the real cost of a website builder donation block for a UK charity.

Is Squarespace a good fundraising platform for UK charities?

It depends on what you need. Squarespace is an excellent website builder. As a fundraising platform for UK charities it has significant gaps: no Gift Aid declaration capture or HMRC Charities Online integration, no small-society-lottery or raffle workflow under the Gambling Act 2005, no peer-to-peer fundraising, no Direct Debit support, no campaign management tools, and no supporter management. The Fundraising Regulator's Code of Fundraising Practice (effective 1 November 2025) sets expectations for online donation platforms that a website builder's donation block does not meet natively. For a charity whose website is primarily a communications tool and donations are occasional, Squarespace may be sufficient. For a charity where fundraising is central, a purpose-built platform handles Gift Aid, compliance, and donor retention far more effectively.

Can I claim Gift Aid on donations received through Squarespace?

Not natively. To claim Gift Aid, your charity must capture a valid declaration from each donor at the point of giving: full name, home address, charity name, and confirmation that the donor has paid sufficient UK income or capital gains tax. Squarespace's donation block does not collect this information and does not store declarations for the six-year HMRC retention window. You would need to capture declarations through a separate channel, maintain your own records, and submit claims manually to HMRC Charities Online. Zeffy handles the full Gift Aid workflow natively: declaration capture, six-year record keeping, and claim submission, at no cost to your charity (HMRC Gift Aid guidance).
